Hi Dan and all:

 

Thanks for bringing up this issue.  I'm not only concerned about delivery
robots, but also delivery drones that Amazon, as an example, is using in
some areas.  How will the thing know to hand off a delivery to us, or get it
to the right house or apartment building?  I lived in a condo complex in
Glen Ellyn where GPS didn't always direct drivers to the entrance of our
building, imagine a robot trying to get to the entrance in a situation like
that, or a drone.

 

I don't think this is a big trend right now, but I'm afraid it could become
a bigger issue.  Part of it is economics, with minimum wages for restaurant
workers and delivery people getting higher and higher, businesses will look
for ways to cut costs.  Why do you think Kiosks are being used in places
like McDonalds Restaurants?  While McDonalds has worked with TPGI using JAWS
for Kiosk to make many of these accessible, there are kiosks in other places
that are not accessible.

 

I think a good start would be to find out how wide spread the use of these
technologies are and how people who are blind have been able to deal with
them.

Hi all,

 

Yesterday I was listening to a podcast from WBEZ in Chicago. There was a
news item about the use of robots to deliver food and other items. Evidently
there is a pilot program in some neighborhoods. Several people with
disabilities were interviewed and expressed concerns because the robots
blocked their path and they needed to travel in the street. Is this an
advocacy issue we should be concerned about? We already have issues with
scooters on sidewalks. I don't think we can eliminate delivery robots but
something might be done to develop standards and safety protocols. I don't
live in Chicago but suspect these robots could come to the suburbs.
