Hi, Chikako.

Though I do not pretend to provide a complete, wholly accurate, or well
organized report of the June chapter meeting, here is my best attempt to
summarize.

Those attending the meeting include Jim, myself and Susan, Sidney, Bob and
Brendy, who brought Master Luther with them, and Loren. Jim announced as
part of his president's report that Lynda has been diagnosed with a serious
neuroorthopedic spinal disorder and is not a candidate for surgery. He notes
she is a candidate for the LMH nursing rehab program which, unfortunately,
Medicaid refuses to cover but will cover a permanent or long term nursing
home stay. (go figure)

Jim also mentioned he has heard from the Lawrence Journal World and other
sources that the are likely to be more audible traffic control signals to be
installed in and by the City of Lawrence as older analog signals are
retired. He voiced agreement with my assessment that it may be too late to
stop this endeavor if the RFP for installation and purchase from a vendor
has been approved and contracts have been awarded.

In my very brief report I mentioned last week's passing of Arthur Turner who
was a former member of the old Douglas County NFB chapter, but not in its
present form. He succumbed to a form of cancer known as multiple myeloma. I
mentioned that the family is suggesting donations in Arthur's memory to the
Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF.) We are of the consensus opinion
that due to the size of unpaid debts to the state level NFB, we may want to
pay tribute to Arthur in a different way, such as a plaque bearing his name
and the chapter's name to be posted at the fire station where he was
assigned. Brendy said she has a couple of contacts at the Lawrence Fire
department and offered to look into plaque placement options and report back
to us.

Sidney tendered her resignation as Secretary, citing health challenges that
make the job more difficult for her. We accepted her resignation, thanked
her for her dedication and dilligence in carrying out her duties with a well
deserved round of applause, and Jim appointed Brendy as our interim chapter
secretary.

There was no report from National Office as Marc Maurer announced in his May
Presidential Release that this would be the last Presidential Release before
national conference.

Susan and I reported that as attendees of the national conference in Dallas
we plan to attend the Back To Basics pre convention seminar for chapter
officers, although anyone is welcome to attend. Susan also states she plans
to attend the seminar on blind persons and sleep related disorders. I don't
remember if this item was mentioned, but I'm happy to inform you that
arrangements have been made for travel in a 7 passenger mini van we are
renting from Enterprise. A friend and former coworker of mine named Charlie
Ross has been hired as our driver.

The name change from Douglas County to Jayhawk Chapter is getting closer to
reality as Paul Van der Tuig from the KU athletics department has notified
Susan he will present us with a formal agreement which is being drawn up by
an in house or retained attorney.

For the state conference, we have agreed to assemble breakfast bags
containing muffins, fruit, and similar items for people to buy for a modest
price which is yet to be determined.

In fund raising, Susan suggested we consider selling nuts (the snacking and
baking kind) to raise funds for the chapter. She is in the process of
locating possible whole sale vendors from whom we could acquire our
inventory. Nut sales would generally take place during the fall holiday
baking season. We encouraged her to keep investigating this fund raising
option.

The meeting adjourned about 6 minutes after 4. Jim or anyone with a better
memory than mine is certainly free to add anything I may have left out. I
hope you have a very pleasant week.

Take care
Rob Tabor
