Hi Jim,

Thank you very much indeed.

That all new boat button was turned on things were muted now it’s off and I hear the noises. I think I did that once before and forgot about it. Had to same problem before that is. So I put it in my notes. Thanks again.

In solidarity,

Pat

Pat,

Several areas to check out.
First is the mute rocker that is located above the volume controls on the side of the device. If this is toggled, alert notifications would be muted and just the banner would pop up. You can test out the rocker by switching it towards and away from you. Switching it towards you will unmute your iPhone. Switching it away from you will mute your device and cause it to give a short vibration. Voice Over will announce whether its being muted or unmuted. I have experienced the rocker being toggled when not using an iPhone case to having an Outterbox Defender case.

Next thing to check out is the Notification Center settings. Just ask Siri to open up Notification Settings. From here, you will scroll through all of the apps on your iOS device. When Voice Over advances over an app, it will state the name of the app, and which notifications styles are activated. You will want to listen for Sounds. If you do not hear sounds, double tap and enter the app’s settings. This menu screen will start with the name of the app and an on/off toggle for notifications for the app. If you allow notifications, the next item on the list are sounds. Make sure the sounds’ toggle is switched to on.

When looking at sounds on apps like Reminders, a different set of options appears. In the Reminders app, the on/off toggle is replaced with the name of the alert tone. I noticed when checking this out while writing this, the button for alert sound options stated updated. After double tapping on this button, a menu appeared that allowed me to select the desired tone from the available tones on your device. After selecting a tone and pressing back, the update button now read the tone’s name.

The Calendar’s notification settings presents you with a slightly different set of options. When you double tap on Calendar, the same allow notification on/off toggle is there. However the Sounds on/off toggle is replaced with a button for upcoming events and announces the alert options toggled on. Double tap on this to select the tone you wish to be played for Calendar alerts. Sounds will be the first option, and will resemble the same set of steps as with Reminders.

The final set of settings to check out will be the Sounds and Haptics controls. The most important settings will be the ringers and alerts volume, the change with buttons on/off toggle, and the alert tones for the various iOS apps. First step is to swipe to the slider control for the Sound Volume. Make sure its loud enough to hear. Next I recommend toggling the change with buttons to off. This toggle when on allows you to change the volume of your ringer and alerts with the volume controls on the side of the iPhone. Finally, check out the tones you selected for the integrated iOS apps, like Reminders, Calendars, Mail, etc…. Yes, you technically just checked this when going through the Notification Center’s settings, but its worth knowing both of these methods do exist.

Let me know if this addresses the inability for your iOS device to play alerts and sounds. There are several other items to check out based on the app, like whether a Calendar event has an alert time selected I can describe. The above steps generally are the culprit in these situations.

Thank you for your assistance,
Timothy Hornik

This has been quite successful for several other calls I host related to tech support calls. Also, if anyone ever has any questions about iOS, feel free to send them my way.
