I am sorry to have to tell you that Dr. Chuck Hallenbeck has passed away. He
was 94.
Some of you old-timers will remember Chuck. He was a Psychology Professor at
the University of Kansas for many years. He was also a talented programmer.
He started programming in the 1960's when he had to write his own
development tools, and assistive technology software, without any assistive
technology to start. with
He is best known for Turbo Braille, a widely-used and capable Braille
translator, "Ralph the Reader" a reading utility widely distributed by me,,
PROVOX a DOS screen reader, and many more. While not as widely known as
some, he was a pioneer in assistive technology. For example, he was the
first screen reader developer to create an independent audio cursor that
could be moved around the screen.
