It is not hard at all to have an auto generated form to let one know that his or her application was rejected. I run into this rather frequently with some nationwide employers, and that is just wrong when an employer never lets you know your application was rejected. Another thing I have run into that will turn me off to working for an organization is if they start making excuses why other orjanizations with the exact same job do not have to follow the ADA when it comes to accommodations. I ran into that with one Contract Closeout Specialist position I was interviewing for a few months ago not to mention nobody on the panel was from HR they were all people who are contract closeout specialists doing the interviewing. As in the article, it was not being well handled as well because each of the panel members should have already had their questions figured out, which they did not. Dick, I will be e-mailling you privately about a job I applied to a couple days ago.

Jordan, maybe it’s because employers are super-busy, and they can’t stand *another* resume and cover letter on their desks? Thinking out loud – opinions welcome. The employers being too busy is how I consoled myself when the resumes and cover letters I sentwent unanswered. The “did you get the resume / cover letter” e-mails also went unanswered...

Could not agree more Dick. I am frankly stunned at the number of employers who do this.

Jen,
That is not only toxic, but very stupid today. I always remind employers to acknowledge resumes. Some still think it is the Reagan era, where you can treat job seekers any way they please. If they are that discourteous, dump them.

Dick,
This is definitely a good thing to think about. I had some of the things mentioned in here happen during a few of the jobs interviews I have had in the past few months, and needless to say, I moved on and am continuing job hunting.

Dear List Members,
Do you know how to spot a potentially toxic work environment during a job interview? This article, which is Australian but still accurate for the U.S. explains how:
