Thank you for answering my questions. I am glad you were able to adapt the charts even though they were not electronic. I am glad you are able to advise The Director of activities. It sounds like all of your volunteering and education helped you a lot. I do have an associates degree but it is in general studies, so at this point I would have to find a position that would fit that level of education.
Thank you for being willing to answer my questions and discuss it with me.

I started working in the field before computers were used to do documentation. I had my ways of adapting charts and such. This is of course the time before AIRA to.

> The short answer to your question is it depends on the facility and the job you want to acquire of course. Experience is really important no matter what and you’re volunteering will help no matter what. As a teenager I did a lot of volunteering in nursing homes and other programs related to activities through my church. I did job shadowing for early childhood exceptional educational needs which everything has a medical related theme so that helped. I have a college degree in social work, and non-teaching certificate in special education and a gerontology certificate. The gerontology certificate is basically a minor but I did that after I graduated originally from college. It was more of a challenge to convince staff that I was safe in a room with somebody for example but I was an activity assistant in both nursing home in an assisted living facility at times in my life. I did a lot of volunteering also with an adult day program in the community I grew up. I don’t think to be an activity assistant you really need a college background. Perhaps an associates in social work or something related but the best thing you can be is well rounded in things like crafts and be good at volunteering is always a plus especially because it would allow you time to figure out adaptations before you applied for a position. Now like a Director of life enhancement is what they’re calling activities now at assisted living in nursing homes does require training. There are some places where you can get college degrees in leisure development or something related and there are people with sociology, social work and psychology backgrounds doing these jobs. Again if you’re wanting to be eventually Director volunteering and knowing what the problem the residents have is going to be beneficial.

> My job was taken from me but it was a blessing in disguise as I had to have foot surgery and then would never of been able to go back to work anyhow. I have other extenuating circumstances besides my vision impairment. It was basically a problem with communication in the department an and a willingness for a 25 year old boss two be willing to have someone older than her, more experienced, and disabled in the department. I don’t think one or the other scared her more. She was inexperienced and this was her first time being manager of something. She was just fresh out of college and only knew the workings of one facility which she eventually got to be the director of the activity department at. She’s only been working in this particular facility for five years and thought she knew everything. Funny thing how karma works; four months later after I was fired I got a text saying hey Ericka, I just want to thank you for all you taught me. So I’m guessing the state kicked her ass when they came in to check the records among other things. She now takes advice from me. Occasionally I will send her an email with maybe a podcast relating to dementia and blindness or some thing that relates to Low Vision and seniors to help her train her staff and be a better support for her seniors in the facility.

I always assumed it is because they want people with reliable transportation, although public transit or para transit is still reliable so even if you didn’t have a drivers license or a car, you could still get to work on time every day.
>> If you don’t mind me asking, I noticed that you said you used to work with seniors. Did you find it difficult to get jobs in that field as a person with a visual impairment, especially someone who is totally blind? What type of work did you do in this field? I am wondering because I was thinking to apply to jobs in this area but was not sure how difficult it would be to get into this field with a visual impairment as far as employers and their misconceptions. I even thought about volunteering at first so they could see what I am capable of and then applying for a job in the place I volunteer with, although it would be nice to be employed as soon as I can. did you find that they require a lot of experience starting out?

They need us as much as we need them. Many people have voluntarily left the workforce for reasons including caring for children or parents, avoiding commuting, disliking their job or supervisor, having saved sufficient money to take a break, feeling burned out, etc. Now may be the time to market to employers and their recruiters. I think recruiters don’t necessarily think of us. What can we do to market ourselves?

A lot of the jobs I see out there do require a job seeker to have a drivers license. Many of them for good reasons not just to be spiteful. Delivery workers and such. I would think a CNA with a visual impairment would have no problem finding work nowadays. We will work and we will show up unlike a lot of people. I worked in that field as some may know. I was not a CNA but worked in healthcare in nursing homes. They can’t keep people were squad. Many of them are only there for a paycheck and nothing else. And honestly they do nothing else will pick up their paycheck and go out for smoking breaks or playing on their cell phones.

Given the extreme shortage of workers and the fact that businesses are closing for periods of time because of lack of staffing, is there something we can do, possibly nationally, to advertise to employers and recruiters that blind people are here, available to work, and excited for the opportunity? It seems like this could be a fantastic time to market blind people to desperate employers. Any thoughts?

Sometimes communities have an app helping connect employers and perspective clients/workers. Janesville Wisconsin has such.
