[Job-Discussions] introduction and two questions.

You know it probably won’t happen in the next 20 years and by then I’ll be 70 so I know I’m on a log too. You don’t realize all the changes that have already occurred. Society is more positive about us than they were in 1971 when I was born.

> Yeah that is true for a lot of people. But then again we’re not doing a good job of campaigning and educating either. Karen Rose is very right and there’s no reason the NFB, ECB and other organizations can’t get together and do mass education. It should be something that is required for all business majors, some section in every business class that teaches how to accommodate people with disabilities not how to get around the laws. HR students need to know how to talk to people with disabilities respectfully. If we put it into the curriculum just as much as pudding how to make a website and other technology-based things accessible to the blind and other disabilities. If we put it into every class, they can’t just opt out of a class specifically targeting working with people with disabilities or accommodating people with disabilities and what they’re creating and so on. I’m terrified that it will become a option not information they have to know before they graduate. I also wonder why the white cane law and other disability rights questions pertaining to drivers are not on the state licensing exams. Apparently it’s not obvious that you slow down and start for someone with a disability. True some of them aren’t obvious in some peoples that should be carrying gains aren’t but you know where I’m going with us.

It’s either too quiet or some other thing. My husbands had the experience where you went to the interview, the receptionist saw him with his cane being totally blind and reported that to the person they were supposed to speak to. Then the receptionist came back and said that the person was busy and couldn’t meet with him. That’s the signal for we’re freaking out here and if we don’t interview you and pass you up then we can’t be held responsible for being discriminatory.

Given the extreme shortage of workers and the fact that businesses are closing for periods of time because of lack of staffing, is there something we can do, possibly nationally, to advertise to employers and recruiters that blind people are here, available to work, and excited for the opportunity? It seems like this could be a fantastic time to market blind people to desperate employers. Any thoughts?

The skills inventory or whatever it is you take to help you determine which jobs to apply for is accessible. My husband did it on his iPhone with very little frustration which is very unusual.

Sometimes communities have an app helping connect employers and perspective clients/workers. Janesville Wisconsin has such. A lot of times it's things like what you're looking for and then sometimes it's all factory work or house cleaning jobs.. Give PJ a pat for me!
