This is a Full-Time 40 Hours Weekly position with the Department of Human

<br>
The Rehabilitation Center for the Blind is a state of the art training
facility located in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The orientation and
mobility specialist is part of a team of professionals with expertise in
teaching the skills of blindness. Referrals come from Service to
the Blind and Visually Impaired rehabilitation counselors and
rehabilitation teachers state wide. The incumbent will provide
training in cane travel, sighted guide, use of devices and other travel
techniques for individuals who are blind or visually impaired to ensure
they learn techniques for safe independent travel. <br>
<br>
This position requires physical stamina to work outside in a variety of
climates year round. The ability to walk distances is required to perform
the essential functions of an orientation and mobility specialist.
Occasional overnight travel will be necessary. Â <br>
<br>
<b>Licenses and Certification:</b>Â <br>
<br>
Possession of a certificate in Orientation and Mobility from a recognized
national, state or professional organization. <br>
<br>
<b>The Ideal Candidate Will Have:</b><br>
<br>
A master's degree in rehabilitation counseling or related field and
certification in orientation and mobility. Ability to work with
minimal amount of supervision. Ability to use judgement in order
to adequately assess the skill levels and needs of each consumer.Â
 <br>
<br>
Knowledge of:<br>
orientation and mobility practices and techniques;<br>
associated standards, rules, policies and procedures that apply to the
teaching of orientation and mobility;<br>
methods used to accommodate the challenges of individuals who are blind
or visually impaired.<br>
<br>
Ability to:<br>
work effectively on a one-on-one basis or in small groups with blind and
visually impaired individuals to teach how to function independently with
vision loss.<br>
assess clients’ functioning levels;<br>
determine appropriate training techniques for each client;<br>
teach orientation and mobility concepts to clients as well as to others
involved in the orientation and mobility field;<br>
communicate information clearly and concisely;<br>
operate and teach operation of mobility devices.<br>
