[Journalists] Question about visual media

Hi Mikaela,

I've used all of those programs, and the only way that I've been able
to do it is with my residual vision. Photoshop and Illustrator are
very much visually-oriented...but InDesign, and what the class will
probably teach, is more about the relation of items on a page. We used
InDesign for yearbook and newspaper layout mostly...so it's about
arranging photos, captions, headlines, and text on the page. So
there's definitely a way to learn that spacial orientation with
Braille or magnet boards. The other two, though...I'm not sure there's
a lot that's easy to do to adapt those.

You might consider -- and it sounds like you already are -- asking the
professor about what the goals of the class are. Sure, they might be
mastering those programs. But what about them does he/she want you to
know? Mastering InDesign might mean arranging a page...mastering
Photoshop might be making graphics for the Web. So maybe you could
learn about the characteristics of good Web graphics more than the
actual Photoshop world.

Just a thought...and let me know what you decide!
