<p style="margin: 0;">In 1903, the principal of the Maryland School for the Blind, F. D. Morrison wrote to several of its former graduates, asking them to attend graduation that spring, or to send words of wisdom to the graduating class. bMorrison was surprised with the last part of the sketch submitted by Thomas Nichols when Thomas said that the biggest blessing he received in his life was being turned down for a teaching job at his school. </p>

<p style="margin: 0;">There were no openings for instructors or assistants at the Maryland School for the Blind in 1880 when Thomas Nichols graduated. Many schools for the blind found employment for their graduates at the schools, if nothing than to keep their numbers up for successful placements. But, Morrison, principal at the time told Thomas that he could do much better for himself outside of the school. Thomas felt betrayed by the school and Mr. Morrison.</p>

<p style="margin: 0;">Thomas Nichols was born December 14, 1861, in Baltimore, Maryland. As a toddler, Thomas was in his highchair that tipped backwards, and Thomas hit his head. The injury damaged the optic nerve, and he became blind. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">He was admitted to the Maryland School for the Blind (MSB) in 1871, at the age of ten. His family lived in Baltimore City meaning Thomas did not stay overnight or on the weekends for his first few years. At the MSB, he studied all the usual classes, arithmetic, geography, history, and religion. Classes were given in music, typing, braille, broom making, and piano tuning. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">In 1880, at 18 years old, Thomas had hard decisions to make. His family moved years before to the Richmond, Virginia area. Should he go there where the community was not use to the blind people out on the streets as they were in Baltimore? His skills in music were good, but not great. Being a piano tuner was not an excellent choice as he felt his skills were not good enough for a career in music to be competitive. </p>

<p style="margin: 0;">Just before graduation, Thomas went to the offices of F. D. Morrison, the principal, and asked to become a teacher at MSB.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">The answer from the principal came swiftly, “No.” Mr. Morrison had obviously given the matter some thought. Morrison continued that there were no vacancies and even if there were, he would not hire him. He told Thomas that he could do much better for himself outside of the school than if he were to stay where he felt safe. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">For several years, Thomas felt disappointed and frustrated at the principal. Only years later, when he could look back through the eyes of an adult and as a parent, did he realize the blessings that Morrison had given him by forcing him to leave the comfort of the school and face the world and himself. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">In Richmond, Virginia, Thomas began to teach piano and music. He tuned pianos on the side. To get his start, he offered to play the organ for a local church, its services, and events for free. It was important to think like a businessman, not just to look for the next piano to tune. Churches let him show his talent to potential customers.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Thomas got to know the town’s people and assured them that he, Thomas did know his trade. If he could not provide adequate instruction, then he told the potential students that he would not accept payment. His strategy worked when several families brought their children to his home for lessons and became regular, paying clients.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">To advertise, he made the acquaintance of several of the newspaper men of the area. The newspapers would publicize his music lessons or his concerts for free. This was a tremendous help to get his name out and a cost saver in a profession that did not pay a lot and was not predictable. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">On a train one day, Thomas sat down next to a man he did not know. They both were heading back to Richmond and struck up a conversation. The man lit up a cigar. Thomas commented on the nice smell of the tobacco. After a conversation on the smells of tobacco, the man asked Thomas to come into business with him. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Mr. R. D. Hall bought, manufactured, and sold tobacco products in the Richmond area. He felt that Thomas’s keen sense of smell would aid him in purchasing better quality tobacco. Mr. Hall was having trouble with making a success of his business. If Thomas could put money into the business, and help with the books, then Mr. Hall would work the customers. The company of Hall and Nichols was formed. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Thomas oversaw the books that he kept in braille for the business. He was good at numbers and balancing the accounts. At MSB, he had learned to type. This skill came in handy at Hall and Nichols as Thomas took over the office correspondence, filing and business follow-ups with over-due accounts.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Not having the funds needed to go into partnership with Mr. Hall, Thomas borrowed from his friends. This was not comfortable for him as he believed one should not borrow money. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">At first, the tobacco business did not require much of his attention. He continued to work tuning piano’s and teaching music. Classes were scheduled around the time he was needed at the plant. In his spare time, Thomas learned more about the tobacco industry and the making of cigars. The factory grew and employed additional men to roll and package cigars. He paid close attention to the books and made sure all accounts were up-to-date and who supplied them with material at what rate. He insisted on insuring the firm, and it came in handy when in 1887 the building almost burned to the ground.</p>

<p style="margin: 0;">Loans to friends were paid off as the business grew rapidly under both men’s leadership. Thomas spent more time at the tobacco company. He purchased a buggy and hired a man to drive him around town. This meant that he could call on potential and current customers himself. </p>

<p style="margin: 0;">By 1895, Mr. Hall and Thomas had amicably parted ways. Thomas formed his own company. Now Thomas was the boss and needed to be on hand each day, all day to supervise the entire business. He advertised in the local newspapers for salesmen who would travel as far as Roanoke to do the work of Mr. Hall. He offered them a wage and commission that would provide a weekly income of $25 to $30, a week, a good wage for the time. </p>

<p style="margin: 0;">In 1896, he opened a grocery store at the corner of Effingham and Country Street. Thomas promised to sell at the lowest prices the customer could find in the city. On his letterhead, the T. J. Nichols Company advertised that they sold tobacco, cigars, cigarettes, and snuff as the primary part of his business. Then underneath was his other ventures such as his grocery, pharmaceutical, and confectionary stores. In 1916, Thomas was listed in the Era Druggist Directory as a manufacturer of Toilet Preparations and cosmetics. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">When a phone was installed in his house in the early 1890s, Thomas moved his offices to his home address. He took an interest in the stock market and the raising and racing of horses. He purchased small stocks at first and invested in new companies. In 1897, he was an investor in a new firm that specialized in musical instruments. Founded in 1888 as a small business, the Manty B. Ramos Company was located at 119 East Broad Street. They sold piano’s, organs and other musical instruments and offered a repair service that Thomas provided early on. The business lasted through the 1910s, providing a return on his investment. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Thomas invested and served on the board of the Manchester Building, Loan and Trust Company. The Loan and Trust offered meeting space to many civic groups during his time as director. The bank held the title to land around Richmond, daring to sell to women directly and women as sole owners in the early 1900’s. No other banks in the area allowed women to take out loans without a man on the mortgage. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">He loved to read medical journals. Family members, his chauffeurs, and hired secretaries read for him. Through articles, Thomas got a germ of an idea, and an invention was formed. Often the invention was the beginning of a new business. One invention was a toothpaste that cured a toothache. Another was a white shoe polish. Patents and businesses were sold off for a profit if his invention did not hold his interest.</p>

<p style="margin: 0;">When autos became popular, he sold fuel and its additives. One of the most interesting names of his products was the INAJIFFI Fuel drops that was to extend the life of every gallon of gas by thirty percent. The company was out of Akron OH. The T. J. Nichols and Co. was the local distributor. The tablets cost about a dollar. One tablet added to 150-200 gallons of gas could extend the milage of the gas by 30%, so the ads claimed. The product was marketed heavily through 1916 and then disappeared. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Thomas continued to be active in the community associations. Networking was the best way to find new customers as well as assure them that a blind man can be a successful businessman. He tried not to use his blindness as a sympathy-vote to gain new customers. Although Thomas knew that as a blind man, he needed to do somethings differently, but overall, he needed people to the extent that sighted people needed each other. News articles including Thomas focused on his actions, words, and activities, not his blindness. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">One of his customers that did business with him for years had a one-armed, salesman that came into the shop. When the owner did not purchase anything from the one-armed salesman, the salesman thrust his stump into the face of the owner. The man was a veteran and said that because of his injury, didn’t the owner think he should buy from him. After all, he deserved the patronage because of his disability.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">The owner said to Thomas’s competitor; “I have been doing business with Mr. Nichols for many years. Not once has he used his blindness to guilt me into purchasing from him. Because of that, I respect Mr. Nichols and will continue to do business with him.”</p>

<p style="margin: 0;">The towns of Manchester and Chesterfield had a joint businessman’s association. Thomas was an active member, chairing committees and writing letters. One of his frequent committee assignments was to the Manchester Permanent Improvements Committee. Some of the discussion Thomas led with this group included a new bridge over the James River as well as improving the sidewalks. Concern was that some of the walkways were in such bad shape that someone walking after dark could fall, and the city of Manchester would be liable. </p>

<p style="margin: 0;">In 1909, the City of Richmond and the City of Manchester were contemplating a merger. Once again the Businessman’s Association took an active role. Most people were in favor of the merger. However, as is the case most often, politics and personal interests were causing confusion. The businessman’s association wanted to take as much of the political rhetoric out of the discussion and focus on the significant issues, the benefit that such a consolidation would bring to all. Thomas and several others in the association took on the task of reaching out to citizens and discussing the merger with the citizens before the election. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Thomas worked his ward, going door to door and discussing the proposal. There were approximately 115 potential votes for the upcoming merger election in his ward. Thomas reported back to his club that he believed that more than 80 would vote for the consolidation. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">One of the major sticking points was that Manchester would have to give up its name and become part of Richmond. Even at the club meetings this was a cause of disagreement. Thomas got up at a meeting and said that he felt giving up a name was not that difficult to do. “…Girls give up their names every day when they get married…” He went on to say that sometimes they regret it. Was he trying to be funny? Maybe.</p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Thomas married Mattie Savage on December 27, 1888, in Petersburg, Virginia. They had two children, Lucile in 1889 and Thomas Jr. in 1893. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">He purchased a home at 1402 Porter Street in Richmond Virginia before the turn of the century. His home has been torn down, but many of the remaining homes in the historic area give us a glimpse of the life that his family led at the turn of the century and for decades to come. The two, and three-story homes had front porches, set back from the streets. Their deep lots allowed for space in the homes. Most averaged around 2,400 square feet or more. At the turn of the twentieth century, this was a large home. At the rear of the lot was a barn that kept the family horse and carriage. In the case of the Nicholas’s, a sleigh. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">In 1912, he obtained a building permit to erect a three-story brick building at the rear of his property. This was a stable and wagon barn for his transportation needs. Rooms on the upper floors were for their house staff/servants. The cost of the brick stable was predicted to be $900. His son, Thomas Jr. operated his small painting business from the family home on Porter Street until he could afford an office. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">The family employed a live-in servant. She was Simple Booth. As a young Black girl of about 12, she came to the door of the Nichols home asking for work. Thomas spoke to her for a time. Simple seemed to be intelligent, and Thomas asked her to start as a servant, cleaning in the home. She soon took on the role of cook for the family. “Sippie” as she was known to the family served the Nichols’s well and remained with the Nichols family until her death. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">One year, when Thomas had done well in the stock market, he told Sippie that she could have a bonus. Sippie said that she would rather have shares in GE stock. So, that is what Thomas gave her as a bonus. </p>
<p style="margin: 0;"><br></p>
<p style="margin: 0;">Business was good and allowed them to have many luxuries. One was a Pierce Arrow automobile. Thomas employed a chauffeur to drive him. When the second world war broke out, Thomas donated the Pierce Arrow to help drive soldiers to and from the airports. That service was Groom Transportation. Groom became a taxi company in 1934 and has been expanding ever since. </p>

<p style="margin: 0;">Thomas retired in 1932. He died June 14, 1954, in Richmond Virginia. </p>
