Ruth had a heart attack while getting ready for the NFB Board Meeting on July 7. I visited her in the ICU at the hospital later that day, and she appeared to be resting peacefully. Ruth was 81 years old.

Ruth loved the NFB so much. I recently spoke with her, where she shared that she intended to attend the convention no matter what because it gave her joy. She passed on while among her Federation family, at the event she loved most.

Many of you know Ruth from her active participation in the Greater Baltimore Chapter. Others may remember her from state or national convention, where she consistently provided vocal advocacy for improving vocational rehabilitation services among many other topics of importance to the blind. Ruth was a graduate of the Colorado Center for the Blind.

Personally, my favorite memory of Ruth was at the 2021 NFB of Maryland Cruise. Every time she’d hear I was in proximity – even if I was quite a distance away, she’d greet me loudly with enthusiasm, “Hello, there’s the President.” She was so enthusiastic about it that she got many of the ship staff to greet me that same way throughout the week. This tickled her so much. In fact, one of the waiters thought my actual name was “the president.”

I will share information about arrangements as they are finalized. Please keep Ruth’s partner Ronald Washington, her brother-in-law and sister, Ray and Mary Lowder, and all who loved her in your thoughts and prayers.

Yours,

Ronza

Ronza Othman, President

National Federation of the Blind of Maryland

443-426-4110

Pronouns: she, her, hers

The National Federation of the Blind of Maryland knows that blindness is not the characteristic that defines you or your future.
