I found the following in the latest edition of APH News a newsletter published by the American Printing House for the Blind, Inc. Thought I'd pass this along. Lions Clubs International to Award $5,000! Lions Clubs International is offering an essay contest for students who are considered visually impaired and who will be 11, 12 or 13 years of age on November 15, 2010. One grand prize winner will receive an award of $5,000. If able to travel, Lions Clubs International will provide accommodations and round-trip travel expenses to Seattle, Washington, for the winner and one parent to accept the award at the Lions International Convention, June 29 to July 3, 2011. The theme for the essay is "Power of Peace." Each essay must be submitted with a completed entry form. Essays must be no longer than 500 words in length, submitted in English, typewritten in black ink and double-spaced. A Lions Club must sponsor participants! If students in your school/organization would like to participate, it will be necessary for you to contact your local Lions Club. You can find information about the nearest club on the Lions Clubs International Web site at www.lionsclubs.org. You will see a link to "Find a Club," or you can simply keyword search "find a club" in the search box. Once again, please note that a school/organization cannot submit entries directly, but must work with its local Lions Club. If you have questions, or need help in getting in touch with a local Lions Club, please contact Kristopher Kempski, Public Relations Specialist, Lions Clubs International at: 630/468-6835, or e-mail: Kristopher.Kempski at lionsclubs.org. _______________________________________________ Nfb-lions mailing list Nfb-lions at nfbnet.org http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/listinfo/nfb-lions_nfbnet.org To unsubscribe, change your list options or get your account info for Nfb-lions: http://www.nfbnet.org/mailman/options/nfb-lions_nfbnet.org/stevencjohnson%40 centurytel.net -------------- next part -------------- An embedded and charset-unspecified text was scrubbed... We invite all qualified candidates to apply. Applicants must be legally blind and enrolled at a post-secondary school in Missouri for the fall of 2011. Scholarships begin at $500 and are based on merit. In addition to receiving the monetary award, the scholarship recipients will be invited to the convention of the National Federation of the Blind of Missouri, March 25-27, 2011. Transportation, registration, and rooming expenses to the convention will be covered. Final interviews at the convention will aid the committee in determining how available funds will be distributed. You should know that merit scholarships from the National Federation of the Blind go directly to the winner and should not be considered as a similar benefit by Rehabilitation Services for the Blind. Therefore, students can use funds to meet expenses not already covered by other funding sources. Also, merit scholarships are viewed very favorably when included in a resume. Message-ID: <1ec5b4ba458bfe7273a8220b5d579420.squirrel@webmail.nabslink.org> Dear NABS members,? ? I am writing once again regarding NABS? 2nd annual Pennies for Pages fundraiser. We have received a great response so far, but we are still seeking readers and sponsors to take part in this exciting fundraising effort!? ? This fundraiser is being run in conjunction with the Braille Readers are Leaders contest, which starts on November 1 and runs through January 4, so there is still plenty of time to sign up. In fact, readers can sign up for the contest and start soliciting pledges up through the end of the contest on January 4.? ? The idea is this. Students, or anybody else who is interested in helping to raise money for Braille literacy and our national and state student divisions, can sign up to participate in the Braille Readers are Leaders program and then solicit donations from friends, family, or anybody really, for Braille pages read throughout the duration of the contest. Of course, donations of fixed sums are also gratefully accepted.? ? If you are already participating in either the K-12 or Adult Braille Readers are Leaders contests, you can simply register with NABS as a reader and find people to sponsor you for each page you read. To register as a reader with NABS, please fill the online form at: www.nabslink.org/pennies_for_pages/pennies_form.php ? Or contact Sean Whalen at smwhalenpsp at gmail.com ? or 608 332-4147. ? ? If you are not yet signed up for the contest, no worries! The reading contest runs from November 1, 2010 through January 4, 2011, and registration for Braille Readers are Leaders is open now, and will remain open throughout the duration of the contest. To register for either the K-12 or Adult Braille Readers are Leaders Contests, please go to www.nfb.org/bral . And, remember, once you have registered for the contest, sign up with NABS to participate in our Pennies for Pages fundraising effort!? ? If, rather than registering as a reader, you would like to support NABS? efforts by sponsoring a reader, or making a fixed donation, please either register as a sponsor at: ? www.nabslink.org/pennies_for_pages/pennies_form.php ? or contact Sean Whalen at smwhalenpsp at gmail.com ? or 608 332-4147.? ? Donations can be accepted in cash or as checks made out to the National Association of Blind Students and can be given to our Treasurer, Nijat Worley, either in person at Washington Seminar or sent, via postal mail, to:? ? Nijat Worley ? 2905 East College Ave, Unit 106 ? Boulder, CO 80303? ? If you wish to participate or have any questions at all about the plan, please contact Sean Whalen at either 608-332-4147 or smwhalenpsp at gmail.com ? . I will be compiling the list of participants and would be happy to answer any questions which anybody might have.? ? Any money we raise through Pennies for Pages will be shared, in equal portions, between NABS, the National Association to Promote the Use of Braille, and the state student divisions (or affiliates) in which the readers reside.? ? NABS looks forward to working together to raise money for, and promote awareness of, Braille literacy!? ? Sincerely, ? ? Sean Whalen ? ? On January 10 at 8:30 PM Eastern, AlphaComm Strategies is hosting a telephone workshop on how to tell your story to the community at large. This workshop is a part of our first special project, Operation Checkmate. For our purposes, "telling your story" goes beyond repeating the NFB's mission statement. A good narrative unites your membership, attracts new recruits, solidifies your partnerships, and diversifies your funding prospects. Learn how to: * take stock of your existing strengths and weaknesses; * evaluate what you can offer and how it stacks up to competing organizations; * examine the community in which you operate; * energize your core base of workers; * use their talents to cultivate strong talking points; and * use this communication to generate compelling events, grant proposals and public awareness campaigns. Your registration is required to generate a roster of participants for the workshop. The most effective presentations actively engage individual audience members, and you should expect to be randomly called upon to help explore real world, concrete examples. Of the people who register, one organization will be chosen with permission to serve as a case study for the discussion. We will not shine a spotlight on the organization. Rather, we will use it as a common reference point on which to leverage some of our analysis. After the call, confirmed attendees will receive an informative packet of resources with more information on how to jumpstart some of the ideas discussed at the meeting. Note: This is not an informal social call. Participants should come prepared to discuss the serious business of ensuring the lasting momentum of your specific group and the vitality of the NFB as a whole. Only the most dedicated members are welcomed, and to that end, we are intentionally not offering a future recording of the conversation. Come prepared to take copious notes. If you cannot attend yourself, please feel free to ask someone to register and participate on your chapter, affiliate or division's behalf using the link below. It's not about standing out from the competition. It's about eliminating it. It's not about hoping for a streak of success. It's about creating it, and if you are fully committed to transforming your organization from good to great, your colleagues will await your presence at a call you absolutely cannot miss. Don't let the introductory nature of this call fool you. For us, it is the beginning of a longer effort to let people know that the various groups of the NFB have something to offer, and they will be heard!
