This year's theme is: Self-Advocacy: Stay Strong.

The purpose of the event is not only to increase 

public awareness and acceptance of individuals with disabilities, 

but also showcase MCB’s commitment since 1906 

to provide uninterrupted quality services to individuals 

who are blind and visually impaired. 

MCB currently serves an estimated 26,000 consumers.

about self-advocacy. 

 

Our panelists are: 

 

Stuart Flom is the founder and president of AdaptiVision, which specializes in finding technology solutions for clients who are blind or who have low vision. Stuart teaches his clients how to use technology to achieve greater independence. Prior to his work in lighting, he was a special education teacher. 

 

Mary Otiato is the Director of Community Supports & Operations for the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission. Mary joined the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 2007 and has also worked for the Commission for the Blind and the Department of Transitional Assistance. Born in Kenya, she holds a bachelor’s degree in Accounting from Philadelphia University and a Master’s in Business Administration in Social Policy Management from Brandeis University.

Since formally being diagnosed as legally blind in 2018, he has used his platform as a visual artist and educator to dispel stereotypes about the assumed limitations of people who are blind and visually impaired. 

 

William Sanabria is a Community Support Specialist at Northeast Independent Living Program. William works with community partners to connect clients to resources, including housing information, transportation services and health insurance. He educates his clients on their benefits so they can make informed decisions and live independently in their community of choice. 

 

Laurie Werle is the Manager of the Low Vision Peer Support Groups Program at Massachusetts Association for the Blind And Visually Impaired. She brings 30 years of experience to the long-standing partnership between MCB and MABVI which is dedicated to providing information and camaraderie to people ages 55 and older who are losing their sight. Today, 35 peer-led groups throughout the state warmly welcome new members to explore tips and strategies to maintain confidence and independence.
