************

The NFB of MA Parents of Blind Children held their monthly meeting on Thursday, Feb. 9th. The meeting began at 6:13PM. Those in attendance included:

Youme Nguyen Ly

Shara Winton

Stephanie Valdes

Kobena Bonney

Justin Heard

Sengil Inkiala

Liz Lesperance

Shara confirmed that our constitution has been approved by the Board of Directors.

Stephanie will represent our division on the nominating committee.

Youme put forth a motion to accept the January minutes as read. Liz seconded. The minutes were approved.

Our IEP meeting will be held during the virtual portion of the state convention on Thursday, March 2nd from 4:30PM to 6:30PM. Stephanie has arranged for one speaker, Michelle, who is a TVI. Justin has also reached out to a speaker as well, Jackie Anderson. This way we will have the perspectives of two IEP professionals. We would also like to hear from a student which Justin will look into. Each speaker will present for approximately 15 minutes. We will also allow time for Q&A. Inky has a contact at the MCB who handles IEP's for children in central MA. We agreed that Inky’s contact would be a great 4th addition to our presentation. We resolved to have 4 speakers in total. Stephanie and Liz will work together to compose an email to public schools advertising the event.

Stephanie reminded us that door prizes are needed for the state convention and to contact Margaret if individuals have items that can be donated. Also, during Friday night of the state convention there will be karaoke and salsa dancing.

We would like the parents’ division to be represented in the exhibit hall. Youme will see if the NOPBC has a pamphlet that we can make copies of to distribute. We also decided to host a bake sale at our table. This will help raise funds for our division. Stephanie and Liz confirmed they will prepare baked goods for the event. All division members are encouraged to participate in the bake sale, if possible.

We'd also like to meet in person at convention and discuss plans for the parents division for the upcoming year.

Stephanie went over the highlights of the presidential release.

Stephanie was informed of a newly blinded parent who is seeking assistance in relating to her sighted children. Stephanie suggested we each come up with one or two tips to assist in the event this mother is able to join our next meeting.

Inky shared that through his work at MCB he is in touch with parents of blind children and would like to spread word about the parents’ division. Stephanie will provide her contact info to Inky.

The meeting adjourned at 7:06PM.

Our next meeting will be Thursday, March 9th at 6:00PM.
