Good afternoon!
I am writing to invite you (and your community) to SpeakEasy Stage Company's current production, Pru Payne by local playwright (and Pulitzer-Prize nominee) Steven Drukman. In this turbulent time, I find that theatre can be a real escape, and this piece is meaningful and gorgeous.
Here is a summary of the show:
Prudence “Pru” Payne is a contemporary Dorothy Parker: a sharp-tongued intellectual and critic who recently signed on to share her extraordinary life in an eagerly-awaited autobiography. But when Pru’s memory starts to fade, her son sets her up in a state-of-the-art care facility, where love takes hold just as the world she once knew begins to slip away. With wit, verve, and above all, heart, Pulitzer Prize nominee Steven Drukman explores questions of memory, identity, and connection.
Run time: 90 minutes, no intermission
The play is running at the Calderwood Pavilion at the Boston Center for the Arts in Boston's South End. While there are performances through November 16th, we do have a few specially scheduled performances that might interest you:
Audio Described Performances and Touch Table Q&A
We have two specially scheduled Audio Described performances: Friday, November 8th at 7:30pm and Saturday, November 16th at 2:00pm. Both have pre-show descriptions that start 20-30 minutes prior. Description by Cori Couture and Andrea Doane.
On Saturday, November 16th, we will have a pre-show event to further the experience. From 12:30-1pm, we'll have a Touch Table, featuring select costumes and props from the show for tactile exploration. Then, stick around from 1-1:30pm for an exclusive pre-show Q&A with the production's assistant director. Afterwards, you can make your way to the pre-show description in the theater.
Tickets are $25 with the promo code SPKAUDIO and can be purchased through this link on our website <https://www.bostontheatrescene.com/shows-and-events/laughs-in-spanish/#performance-picker> or by calling the Box Office at 617-933-8600.
Relaxed Performance
We also have a relaxed performance scheduled for this Sunday, November 10th at 3pm. Nothing about the production itself will change, but we will have relaxed theatre etiquette expectations and a "judgment-free zone" to welcome those who might not usually feel comfortable attending. Patrons can feel free to exit and enter as they need (as there is no intermission for bathroom breaks), to bring fidget materials, and to react in whatever ways feel natural to them.
Following this performance, we will have a post-show panel about art therapy entitled "Art-making and Well-Being: Learn the Benefits of Art on the Mind & Body", hosted by the Goddard House.
Tickets are $25 with the promo code SPKRELAXED and can be purchased through this link on our website <https://www.bostontheatrescene.com/shows-and-events/laughs-in-spanish/#performance-picker> or by calling the Box Office at 617-933-8600. Please note - this performance is almost sold out, so please reserve your tickets soon!
