Research Participation Request: Exploring Financial Data Trends with
Multimodal Candlestick Charts
The research participant solicitation below is being provided for
informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no

research mission.
Research Title: Exploring Financial Data Trends with Multimodal Candlestick
Charts
Being conducted by: University of Illinois/Institute of Museum and Library
Services (IMLS)
Purpose of the Study
This work is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)
under grant #RE-254891-OLS-23, titled Beyond Visuals: Improving
Accessibility of Data Curation and Multi-Modal Representations for People of
all Abilities through Reproducible Workflows. As part of this multi-year
project, we established a formal partnership with the NFB, coordinated by
Bridgid Burke.
As part of this ongoing grant project, we have just completed development of
a new accessible candlestick chart specifically tailored to financial data,
combining tactile graphics, screen-reader compatibility, and audio cues to
support blind and low-vision users in exploring market trends. We are now
recruiting participants to help us evaluate its effectiveness and usability.
The purpose of the overall grant project is to investigate the accessibility
of data visualizations among BLV people. This includes, but is not limited
to, graphs, charts, plots, diagrams, and data tables. These findings will be
used to understand how BLV people perceive and comprehend data
visualizations, including what techniques and technologies you use.
Additionally, the findings will be used to help innovate tools, libraries,
and frameworks for use in curating accessible data visualizations.
Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study
a) Each session will be approximately 60 minutes long.
b) The session will consist of a guided tutorial on financial chart
concepts, followed by a hands-on evaluation of the MAIDR system.
c) The session will involve a think-aloud exploration and feedback
discussion with researchers.
d) Participants will be asked to share feedback on usability,
accessibility, and their experience learning to interpret financial data
with MAIDR.
Proposed Participant Compensation
Yes, Participants will receive compensation of a $50 Amazon Gift Card for
the session.
