NLS Presents: "Listen to the Universe"
Virtual Event with NASA and the Smithsonian Institution
Have you ever listened to the universe? NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory is
a telescope designed to detect X-ray emissions-data that some scientists
then process and interpret using sonification, which turns large data sets
into sound.
In collaboration with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory and the Smithsonian
Institution, NLS is hosting a virtual panel to discuss how data captured by
the observatory is processed and made accessible for scientists with visual
impairments and how astronomers with visual impairments pursue their
careers. Panelists will include Dr. Wanda Diaz, who is blind and is a
leading proponent of sonification of astrophysical data, and Christine
Malec, an accessibility consultant who also is blind.
This event will be of particular interest to young patrons curious about
career options in astronomy and other scientific fields.
Zoom Event
This virtual panel of scientists will be streamed live on Zoom at 7 p.m.
eastern time on Wednesday, February 5th.
