Hi everyone,
I just wanted to give you all a brief update on Washington seminar. Our Massachusetts team had a very successful few days on Capitol Hill. We met with all 11 legislators from Massachusetts, and several agreed to co-sponsor the bills we brought to their attention, which were the Websites and Software Accessibility Act, the Medical Device Nonvisual Accessibility Act, and the Blind Americans Return to Work Act.
Additionally, at the beginning of Washington seminar, the national office introduced a new priority: protecting and defending the laws and funding sources that blind people depend on, such as the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, the National Library Service, and rehabilitation services, among others. All of our legislators enthusiastically agreed to do what they could to preserve these important laws and funding streams if they were to be called into question.
I could not be more proud of our team and what we were able to accomplish this year! There will be more advocacy opportunities on the horizon, so stay tuned.
Best,
Kyra Sweeney
Legislative Director, NFBMA
