Grocery Store Gift Cards for Cambridge SNAP Recipients
The City of Cambridge is distributing grocery store gift cards to eligible Cambridge residents, including persons with disabilities who are current SNAP recipients.
* The grocery store gift cards are $50 each and available for use at Market Basket, Star Market, and Target. Each gift card is single use.
* The grocery store gift cards for persons with disabilities will be distributed through the Council on Aging at the following times:
* Tuesday, November 18 from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at the North Cambridge Senior Center (2050 Massachusetts Ave.)
* Friday, November 21 from 9 – 11 a.m. at the Cambridge Senior Center in Central Square (806 Massachusetts Ave.)
Gift cards will also be distributed to persons with disabilities who live in Cambridge Housing Authority, Homeowner’s Rehab, Inc, and Just-A-Start housing developments. Distribution dates will be announced by individual buildings.
* Residents will be asked to show their EBT card in order to receive a gift card.
Note: You may send someone to pick up a gift card on your behalf. They will need to have your EBT card and a signed letter from you stating that it’s okay for them to pick up your gift card.
* If you are not a current SNAP recipient, you will not be eligible to receive a grocery store gift card from this program.
* The Cambridge Public Health Department has a Cambridge Food Resource Guide (in multiple languages) with information about local food pantries and community meals.
* The state's Department of Transitional Assistance is continuing to accept SNAP applications and to provide updates on SNAP benefits. You are eligible to apply if:
* You are a Cambridge or Somerville resident
* You are a renter or homeowner
* You meet federal income guidelines (see the <https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/5yzmxwxab.cc.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001_NWjVuCt4a1PnMOdIVd8j5kc09hkfcwytTJIgAQ48XWQKuLKVVDj-Gyx_qB5OXg0495z_LsDN2hkRP9G_m-t51kfhxS153jdENfLK7j0uv4WKArgHp2RXtQ9WWQn03PtdsDjC5VftFjfRl1VADSP-Zxf9vyqqblGCFs0flXs9wga7mIM6YyqaQ==&c=uuZznNRY-FGlR0CrxiFSqB0d79AzmCHv-A8enGVd00UwX1j_KQnlMQ==&ch=J4M8DFVBMBVoIM7F__Te-J14_uieLSKJLOeJkDKD1KrkZg-duokzEQ==__;!!CPANwP4y!UkSikdKLBgeSOTbkQGBNu5NU3zT9GV_bYgQHNqamUSlIlQTXPK8_28m6BapLMOH1q_BQoRqVcQNrAMFdeG8mBXn6Hjve$> HEAP website for income eligibility)
Impact of Federal Shutdown on HEAP Applications
* Since HEAP is a federally funded program, the federal government shutdown will cause delays in processing applications and issuing payments this heating season.
* Currently, HEAP has funding for heating-related emergencies only. Emergencies include: no heat, less than 1/8 of a tank of oil or less than 3 days' supply of other deliverable fuels, or if your household receives a shut-off notice.
* If you are experiencing a heating emergency, call the Cambridge HEAP Office at 617-665-6234 to receive assistance within 24 hours.
* To support low-income households this winter, the Commonwealth’s Department of Public Utilities will prohibit gas and electric companies from shutting off service to households that receive a low-income discount rate on their utility bills, effective through April 1, 2026.
We encourage Cambridge and Somerville residents to continue applying to HEAP. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis in order of submission and HEAP staff will provide information to eligible applicants about their benefit amount when federal funding is in place.
