The below research participant solicitation is being provided for informational purposes only. The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.
Research Title: Beyond the Visual: Rethinking Explainable AI for Accessibility in Blind and Low-Vision Users
Being conducted by: University of Texas at San Antonio
Purpose of the Study
Over the past few years, AI tools, such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Be My AI, Seeing AI etc. have become widely adopted in both
mainstream and assistive technology applications. These tools offer significant potential for enhancing accessibility, particularly for people who are blind or have low vision (BLV). However, their complex and often opaque decision-making processes raise critical concerns regarding trust and interpretability ”especially among marginalized populations who may already face barriers in technology use. The goal of this project, conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), is to examine how blind and low-vision individuals perceive trust and interpretability when using AI tools, and how these
perceptions influence their confidence and engagement with such technologies.
This study will use a qualitative approach, conducting semi-structured interviews with participants who self-identify as blind or have low vision. The findings are expected to contribute to the growing body of technology research and support the development of ethical, inclusive AI systems. This project will help ensure that Explainable AI algorithms are developed for improving the accessibility needs of blind and low vision individuals, ultimately promoting a more inclusive and equitable digital society.
Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study
The study is an online interview of the participants via Zoom. The researchers will ask questions regarding their experience, challenges and perceptions of using the Generative AI tools. Participants will also be asked to demonstrate an example of how they use assistive techs like Be My AI, Seeing Ai, if they feel comfortable. The whole interview is expected to last between 45 to 60 mins.
Proposed Participant Compensation
Yes, Participants will receive $30 Amazon digital gift card within 3-5 business days of participating in the study.
