Subject: [Massachusetts-NFB] NFB of Massachusetts Email List Configuration Changes
Please be aware that we have returned the NFB of Massachusetts email list to a system where subscribed members can create posts which are immediately published to list members.
We had been testing a system where some posts were human moderated before being released to the list.
After receiving preliminary member feedback, after discussions in particular at the Cambridge chapter meeting, etc. , we have at this time, returned the technical configuration to a state where all user posts are immediately published to the mailing list without any type of human moderation or administrative review.
The board and executive officers are continuing to review what the best policy configuration would be for managing any Massachusetts email lists, but as I noted, we have returned it back to its original and default configuration while that review takes place.
While there is not yet an official affiliate policy, I would personally urge you to take the following in to consideration when posting:
1. Reply and Personal Messages – Think Before You Post:
Please consciously think about before you post to the list. Can you contact one or two people personally by phone or email instead of a full broadcast list posting? The list has dozens or hundreds of members, so thinking before we post is helpful to reduce email traffic and to keep the list traffic manageable. Please be conscious when using a reply function if the message is going to the entire list rather than one person. In many cases, you can contact 1 or two people directly instead of sending a reply message to the dozens or hundreds of list subscribers. Feel free to contact the original poster directly by email, text, or phone; rather than creating a broadcast list response.
2. Do Not Post Personally Identifiable Information PII:
Please avoid posting details like PII that may identify yourself or especially other members. For example others phone numbers, street addresses, or other data that could identify a member or be considered confidential.
3. Civility:
Please maintain civility and avoid personal defamatory remarks or similar. Feel free to debate issues, philosophy, but avoid making it personal to one member or consumer.
4. Are you comfortable if your comment would be in The Boston Globe Tomorrow:
All of our list messages are archived on a web site
http://nfbnet.org
and the content is searchable. This can be helpful as NFB staff, leaders, members and others research topics important in the blind community. But it also means anything you say here can and likely will be stored forever on the internet. This is not different or unique than any other internet based group or service. Its just important to remember that anything you say on the internet can remain posted for a long time, if not forever, after you post it. This is not to discourage posts, but again to encourage, you to think before and while you post something.
We hope the list continues to be a valuable source of NFB and blindness community information for our members, friends, and supporters.
Best,
Mika Pyyhkala
2nd Vice President
