The National Federation of the Blind has no involvement in this research, but we believe that it may contribute to our research mission.<br><br> <o:p></o:p></p><h2>Research Title: Screen Readers and Braille Displays<o:p></o:p></h2><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:12.0pt'> <br><br>Being conducted by: Texas A&M University-Commerce<o:p></o:p></p><h2> <br><br><br>Purpose of the Study<o:p></o:p></h2><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:12.0pt'>The purpose of this study is to explore the process of using screen reader software to complete computer-based tasks by experienced adult users who are blind. <br><br>A case study methodology will be employed to examine the user experience in context, in which participants will use their own technology to demonstrate typical tasks. This exploratory study seeks to answer the following research questions:<br><br>1. What preferences do participants exhibit in their use of screen reader software and refreshable braille displays?<br><br>a. When there is more than one way to accomplish a task (e.g. open a given software program using the Start Menu or a desktop shortcut), which option do they choose and why?<br><br>b. If they have access to a refreshable braille display, for which tasks do they use it? What are some examples of tasks for which they only use their screen reader software?<br><br>2. What preferences do participants have related to screen reader and refreshable braille display settings?<br><br>a. At what speed do participants prefer to listen to their screen reader? Does this change depending on the task at hand?<br><br>b. What braille settings are selected in the screen reader software menu, and how many braille cells do they have on their display?<br><br>3. What training opportunities and resources do screen reader users regularly access?<br><br>a. What types of training opportunities have participants received for screen reader and braille display instruction?<br><br>b. What resources are participants regularly accessing (e.g. online user groups, software Help Menu, vendor training resources, friends or colleagues)<br><br>c. What is an example of a recently learned new skill, setting, or option that they now use regularly?<o:p></o:p></p><h2> <br><br><br>Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study <o:p></o:p></h2><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:12.0pt'>This study consists of two phases:<br><br>Phase One: Electronic screening survey, unlimited participants. Participants who agree to be in this phase of the study will answer a series of questions on a digital survey.<br><br>Phase Two: Individual case studies, 5-10 participants. Participants who agree to be in this phase of the study will be contacted to participate in a 60-90 minute long videoconference session on Zoom, where they will answer some interview questions and demonstrate use of screen reader software (including any braille display use).<o:p></o:p></p><h2> <br><br><br>Proposed Participant Compensation<o:p></o:p></h2><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:12.0pt'>Yes, Participants chosen to participate in phase two of the study will receive a $25 gift card.<o:p></o:p></p><h2> <br><br><br>Link or Instructions for Participants to Enter the Study <o:p></o:p></h2><p class=MsoNormal style='margin-bottom:12.0pt'>Dr. Belinda Rudinger (Texas A&M University-Commerce) is conducting a research study to explore preferences and practices of adults using screen reader software and refreshable braille displays.
