I have been in and out of NFB since 1977, and I'm not remotely
close to the inner workings as I maybe was in the 1980s--which was
not in the inner circles. From what I know and remember, in the
days of Jacobus tenBroek we may have been more connected with
activists in other disability groups than we were later, and that
we now may be restoring that old spirit. I don't know whether our
folks would think it right to take an official stand on the
services in question here, but I suppose it might, since there are
blind people who will be affected and their blindness would to
some degree affect the impact to them, maybe worsening it.

Reading the message about the rally and Justin's follow-up, I see
a question about what role our organization should play, but I see
no sign that NFB will try to dictate any8thing on this matter. We
historically have had mixed dealings with other disability groups,
and it was fashionable among some of their folks to complain about
our tendency to separate ourselves. They made some fair points, I
think, but I think Ken Jernigan was right to worry about our being
swallowed up by a large, amorphous coalition. Among other things,
it was quite common in my early NFB days, and this remains way
more true than it should, that people often blended disabilities
in their mind so that blind people had inflicted on us "services"
that were designed to meet other needs. (People think blindness
means I need an elevator or a "handicapped" bathroom or a
wheelchair. This sort of thing, though with different
particulars, has happened to people with other disabilities that
I've known.) If I understand Justin's message correctly, I think
he's asking a fair question about what the role of our
organization should be concerning the rally.

I have no problem with spreading the word on this rally. My
impression is that we're working reasonably well with other
disability outfits, including the Bay State Council, by the way.
I will have a problem only if we assert a greater knowledge of
other disabilities than we have, if some other group claims that
its disability allows it to know more about blindness than it does
or can, or if other disability activists take the view that we
must follow their lead simply because we also are folks with
disabilities. I won't worry unless I see any of those three
things happening, and right now, I don't.

I've written long, and maybe I should simply have gone to bed.
It's just that for a very long time, in or out of NFB, I've had to
consider how we can work with others on common issues while
retaining our focus on the one that caused us to organize, and
also how to be true to the basic philosophy that we should bring
both to common and to separate endeavors. If people see this as
too general or abstract, or too windy, they may be right, but I
hope not.
