If you have been before, you know our trip is full of outdoor exploration, new learning, and reuniting with friends, both old and new. The weekend is full, with <strong>hiking, tandem cycling, kayaking and rock climbing</strong>, along with campfires, mountain air, sing-a-longs, and shared meals. This year, in our new site, the Highland AMC Center of Bretton Woods, we have a wonderful experience ahead of us! <br>
<br>
When considering this event, please carefully consider your fitness readiness; all activities present challenge and require a high level of physical conditioning. <br>
Rain options will be available as needed. Our activities are:<br>

<u><strong>Friday </strong></u>
<ul>
<li style="mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;">Travel to the Highland Center for an afternoon warm-up hike and dinner. </li>
</ul>
<u><strong>Saturday</strong></u>
<ul>
<li style="mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><strong>Hike: </strong>with experienced guides, on a beautiful mountain trail with challenging varied terrain. </li>
</ul>
<u><strong>Sunday:</strong></u> explore one primary activity: (you may have some time to explore another activity, time allowing).

<li style="mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><strong>Kayaking for all levels:</strong> both single and double- offering stroke training, games on the water, and challenges and laughter for all, with experienced paddlers and guides.</li>
<li style="mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><strong>Tandem Biking: </strong>(for all levels) with experienced Captains led by<em> Adaptive Sports Partners of the North Country.</em></li>
<li style="mso-line-height-rule: exactly;-ms-text-size-adjust: 100%;-webkit-text-size-adjust: 100%;"><strong>Indoor Rock Climbing:</strong> beginners or experienced, with trained guides led by <em>Adaptive Sports Partners of the North Country.</em></li>
</ul>
<strong>The Highland Center of AMC</strong>, perched on the top of Crawford Notch, and surrounded by the Presidential Range, a long gorgeous notch below, fire pits, walks, two small shops, a gallery of famous mountain photographs, and a concert on Saturday night! The Center offers all our meals, a fireplace, and rooms for gathering.<br>
<br>
<strong>Carpooling / Transportation </strong>from the Boston Area will be available, provided by NESFL <strong>by reservation only. </strong>A small \u201cgas fee\u201d for the drivers will be added to the bill of those who use this carpooling option. All carpooling from the Boston area will depart at <strong>9:00 AM Friday.</strong> <br>
<br>
<strong>Cost: </strong>The Full Weekend Package is at a subsidized price of<strong> $300 per person </strong>(additional $20 for carpooling transportation); price includes two nights\u2019 lodging, lunch and dinner on Friday, all meals on Saturday, breakfast and lunch on Sunday, and all activities. The great company is at no additional charge!<br>

<span style="font-size:12px">NESFL is happy to report the great success of the day-long, blind birder bird-a-thon, May 18th<br>
2025, a 24-hour birding event designed for birders who are legally blind. This inaugural event<br>
encouraged participants to identify as many bird species as possible by sound (or sight!).<br>
Celebrating accessibility and the joy of birding, this event drew more than 200 participants who<br>
counted 200 species at parks, gardens and backyards in 34 states, including California, Florida,<br>
Idaho, Texas, Montana, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and New York. Press coverage included a<br>
feature article in the Washington Post, and interviews with NPR and WGBH.<br>

Event founders Martha Steele and Jerry Barrier joined at Mount Auburn Cemetery, a 174 acre<br>
famous birding site situated just over the Charles River from Boston. This was one of four events<br>
in the Boston area supported by The Carroll Center for the Blind and promoted by New England<br>
Ski for Light. Here, birding by ear expert, Jered Keyes, from the Brookline Bird Club led a group<br>
of over 20 blind and low vision participants and friends to identify over 40 bird species on a two<br>
hour walk.<br>

The activism of Martha, Jerry, and others is a great example of how working to share your<br>
passions for the outdoors with others can open up doors for so many of us who are blind and<br>
have low vision. This event was a great success by any measure! It serves to start a dialogue<br>
between all birding groups to better welcome and be more inclusive of Blind and Low Vision<br>
community members. It has gained international attention. For those who registered, a post-<br>
mortem meeting is scheduled on June 5th. Please join and support this as an annual event<br>
which NESFL plans to host.<br>
