We aim to learn whether START supports skill acquisition, technology adoption, and the achievement of personally meaningful functional goals â\u20ac\u201d such as using Alexa to manage daily tasks, access information, or enhance independence. Participants will complete START and a comparison training program, and we will measure goal attainment, technology use, and training experience over approximately six weeks.

Role of the Participants and Anticipated Length of the Study

Participants will complete a demographic questionnaire and meet remotely with a study assessor to identify 2 to 3 personal goals for smart speaker use (approximately 45 to 60 minutes). They will then be randomly assigned to complete either the START training modules or a comparison training program based on Amazon Accessibility Initiative materials, at their own pace within two weeks (approximately 2 to 3 hours). Following the training, participants will meet remotely with the assessor to review goal progress (approximately 30 minutes). Four weeks later, a final remote session with the assessor will capture final goal rating (approximately 30 minutes). The full study spans approximately 6 to 8 weeks and 4 to 5 hours of participant time, completed entirely remotely.

Proposed Participant Compensation

Yes, Participants will receive $40 and will keep the Alexa device provided by the study team at no cost, as compensation for their time and participation.

Link or Instructions for Participants to Enter the Study

Interested participants may contact the research coordinator, Paola Esquivel, by email at paola.esquivel@pitt.edu to learn more or begin the enrollment process

Contact the following individual with any questions

Paola Esquivel

4128053167

paola.esquivel@pitt.edu
