Hello all,
The next meeting of the At-large Chapter will be on Tuesday, April 19. We
are having a special guest speaker: Ever Lee Hairston. Ever Lee is a
member of the Board of the Directors of the National Federation of the
Blind. She is also the author of "Blind Ambition - One Woman's Journey to
Greatness Despite Her Blindness." Some of you will remember Ever Lee. She
was the National Representative when we had our State Convention in
Annapolis.

Minutes for the At large chapter of the National Federation of the Blind of
Maryland
March 15, 2016
The Presidential Release was played at 7:30 PM.
The NFB President made the following announcements:
* It is Read across American Day and the NFB has made a video to
commemorate this day.
* Amazon has signed an agreement with the NFB to make their reading
content accessible to the blind.
* Preregistration is now open and will close on May 31st for this
year's convention in Orlando, Florida from June 30th to July 5th.
* You now can apply for the Kenneth Jernigan Scholarship for
National Convention. Deadline is April 15th.
* The NFB has published a book called the Power of Love, which are
essays by Kenneth Jernigan.
The Meeting was called to order at 8:00 PM via conference call by Marguerite
Woods.
There was around 15 members in attendance
Marguerite and Sharon Haskins-Brown shared their experiences and what they
learned from the iPhone workshop that they attended on Wednesday, March 9th
at the Library.
Marguerite announced that Steve will share information about different phone
Apps at an upcoming meeting.
Dana spoke about the case involving Yasmin, who sued Montgomery County with
the help of the NFB. The Judge ruled in her favor.
Sharon Maneki gave us an update on the bill and case regarding rights of
blind parents in custody disputes.
At last month's meeting they talked about doing something differently and
during this meeting a few members shared something that they did out of
their comfort zone.
At this meeting there were two guest speakers from the Baltimore Sheriff's
Office, Major Harper and Captain Cruise, to give guidelines on safety. They
spoke on the following topics: buddy system, purses, people at your door,
local police security survey, Smoke detectors, fire safety, cooking habits &
safety, heat safety, preventing falls, outdoor home safety, stairwell and
stair safety, and sign up for direct deposit. There was time for questions
