Braille Challenge Writing Workshops

High School Braille Readers, 10th to 12th grades

Saturdays, 10 AM to 12 PM PDT on Zoom

09/28/2024 to 11/16/2024

Join us for a mentally stimulating, rip-roaring, virtual eight-week learning
series centered around writing using everyone's favorite six-dot system.
Find out how being literate in braille can give you a leg up in just about
every area of life you can think of, and finish off strong with new ideas on
how to integrate the dots into your daily groove. You'll bond with a group
of passionate blind and visually-impaired youth who can appreciate the
thrill of reading by touch and meet professionals who will share the lowdown
on becoming a total braille boss. Two learning tracks are available; keep
reading to see which one fits you best.

Academic Writing Track

This workshop, taught by researchers such as National Science Foundation
Program Director Simon Fischer-Baum and Professor Robert Englebretson from
Rice University, is designed to answer your burning questions around the
accessibility barriers you might encounter as you prepare for your
undergraduate adventures. You'll learn how to craft a compelling personal
statement, uncover the mysteries of the undergraduate admissions system, and
persuade the powers that be to improve their accessibility foibles, all
while exploring the advantages that working in braille can offer you
throughout the process. Even better, you'll realize how much we've yet to
learn about what your brain is doing as your fingers are on the move. Come
learn how you can help improve our understanding through participating in
and eventually conducting, writing, and publishing research. If you're
feeling a little dubious about traversing a world of people clueless about
braille, this is the workshop series for you.

Creative Writing Track

This one is for all the storytellers out there! Led by an Antioch University
Masters of Fine Arts candidate with publishing experience, you'll be delving
into everything from screenwriting to poetry. Develop your unique voice as
your instructor walks you through strategies for taking feedback in stride,
crafting sparkling dialog, and creating characters so real you can
practically feel them pop up off the page. Does this sound up your alley?
Then this is the workshop series for you.

Will you be joining in on the fun?
