He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Marian Allen White; one son, Scott A. White (Jenivieve); three siblings, William J. White II (Debbie), G. Emmett White (Jo Ann) and Mary Leigh McDonald (Paul); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Herb retired in 1996 after over 37 years of service with Richmond Newspapers, Inc. His philanthropic nature greatly impacted his community, as he was involved in numerous service organizations. In 1963, he was one of four individuals who founded the King William Volunteer Rescue Squad and in 1965, was instrumental in adding on the King William Volunteer Fire Department, remaining an active member in both organizations for more than 20 years, and was a Charter and Life Member. Herb was a member of the King William Ruritan Club, serving as past Secretary/Treasurer of the Ruritan Foundation, Incorporated during construction of the new Ruritan Community Building and Park, and served for a number of years as a Director with 22 years of perfect attendance. He was also a Charter Member of the Mattaponi Crime Solvers, a director of Prevent Blindness Mid-Atlantic, serving as Chairman of the Board for two years, a member of Joppa Lodge #40 AF & AM, a member of Colosse Baptist Church, and served for 36 years as Chairman of the King William Board of Zoning Appeals. His character and willingness to help anyone in need was demonstrated by the way he lived his life. The family would like to extend a special thanks to Drs. Samuel M. Janney II and Roger Cappello and their staff members. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Mechanicsville Chapel of the Bennett Funeral Home, 8014 Lee-Davis Rd. Services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, January 30, 2019, at Sharon Baptist Church, where his remains will be laid to rest in the church cemetery following the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the King William Volunteer Rescue Squad/Fire Department or the Mattaponi Rescue Squad

Ronza Othman, President

National Federation of the Blind of Maryland

443-426-4110
