Second Phase of Metrorail Fare Adjustments to Take Effect August 1

Metro Offers Savings to SmarTrip(r) Card Users

The second phase of Metrorail fare adjustments will take effect on Sunday, August 1, with the implementation of a new 20-cent surcharge during peak-of-the-peak weekday travel periods, an increase in the cost of three Metrorail passes and a 25-cent discount per trip for customers who use a SmarTrip(r) card instead of a paper fare card.

Metrorail customers who use a SmarTrip(r) card instead of a paper fare card will save 25 cents per trip, enjoying the same convenience and savings of SmarTrip(r) as Metrobus riders.

In addition, Metro is reducing the cost of a SmarTrip(r) card by 50 percent to $2.50 starting on August 29 to make it easier for customers to take advantage of the SmarTrip(r) discount. This marks the first reduction in the price of the cards since SmarTrip(r) was first introduced in 1999.

The 20-cent surcharge will apply to trips taken weekdays between 7:30 and 9 a.m. and 4:30 and 6 p.m. weekdays. Senior citizens and people with disabilities who pay their fare with a Reduced Fare SmarTrip(r)<http://www.wmata.com/fares/reduced.cfm> card or a Senior SmarTrip(r) Card<http://www.wmata.com/fares/smartrip/senior.cfm> will be charged a 10-cent surcharge during the same peak travel periods. The surcharge will generate vital funding, and it will encourage customers who have the flexibility to ride during less crowded times, alleviating congestion during the peak periods. The surcharge is based on the starting time of the trip, or when a customer enters the fare gate at a Metrorail station.

Metro has updated the Trip Planner feature on its web site to allow customers to see the cost of their future trips on Metrorail to include the 20-cent peak-of-the-peak surcharge. Customers can visit www.MetroOpensDoors.com<http://www.MetroOpensDoors.com>, enter their trip information and the date of August 1 or later to find out the cost of future trips.

In addition to the surcharge, the cost of three Metrorail passes will increase on August 1. The Weekly Short Trip Pass will be $32.35, the Weekly Fast Pass will be $47 and the Transit Link Card for MARC and VRE riders will be $102.
