Subject: Reminder and Request for Saturday Technology Training Session on Deaf-Blind community perspective, DC Public Library, Oct 6th, 1PM to 4PM

This is a reminder and a request for volunteers for the Saturday Technology Training Session for Saturday, Ocotber 6th, one week and a day from now, which will focus on education, rights, technology and communication in the Deaf-Blind community. The request is for two volunteer typists who can type relatively fast on a QWERTY keyboard. Haben Girma, one of the presenters, uses a Refreshable Braille Display and needs for the audio content of the other presentations, and questions, to be typed into a QWERTY keyboard, not a Professional CART keyboard which is incompatible with Braille displays. So long as the person is a reasonably fast typist on a QWERTY keyboard, prior experience is not as important. Other Volunteers are needed as well to perform various duties including guiding participants from the front door to the division, setting up chairs and helping with audio visual set-up. Details of the presentations are below:

Haben Girma, a student at Harvard Law School and advocate for disability rights, will be here in person to talk from her experience on topics such as disability rights and education.

Nadia Damato, a student at Gallaudet University who is studying to be a Deaf-Blind interpreter will participate in-house and will talk from her experience on topics such as adaptive technology and tactile sign language.

Claire Trevedi from DC Laughter Yoga will provide a brief therapeutic laughter yoga presentation at the beginning of the session.

Some details about the presenters is below:

Haben Girma's work as an advocate for disability rights broadened into an international mission when she served as a U.S. delegate for the U.S./Costa Rica Disability Rights and Leadership Exchange with Mobility International USA. In the summer of 2010, she joined DeafBlind Young Adults in Action in Washington, DC, to meet with Members of Congress and their staff to promote policies benefiting Americans with disabilities. With DeafBlind Young Adults in Action and the Helen Keller National Center, she also attended the White House's Celebration of the 20th Anniversary of the ADA, and met President Obama. She is committed to promoting civil rights for Americans with disabilities.

Nadia Damato studies tactile sign language at Gallaudet University and is an Apple desktop and mobile device accessibility expert. She will speak in depth about some of the many different methods of communication that people who are deafblind use, about some ways to use the VoiceOver screenreader along with Braille display to communicate, and also about how good communication along with a facility with technology is crucial to relationships and membership in social groups, for people who are deafblind.

Claire Trevedi from DC Laughter Yoga will do a short presentation on Laughter Yoga, a form of yoga employing self-triggered laughter. The concept of Laughter Yoga is based on the scientific observation that the body cannot differentiate between fake and real laughter, and that both provide the same physiological and psychological benefits. Laughter Yoga combines unconditional laughter with pranayama (yogic breathing). Laughter yoga was made popular as an exercise routine developed by an Indian physician. The concept has rapidly spread worldwide. As of 2011, there are more than 8,000 Laughter Clubs in 65 countries.
