Bumpy Domes
Metro on pace to have these safety devices installed on all station platforms by the end of 2014.
Metro staff has developed a plan to ensure that bumpy domes, the detectable warning devices signifying the approaching edge of a Metrorail station's platform, are installed on all platforms in all Metrorail stations by the end of 2014.
The Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires transit systems like Metro to have 2-foot wide bumpy domes installed at key stations and all new stations. Metro long ago fulfilled the requirement related to the key stations, and all of Metro's newest stations have been built or will be built with bumpy tiles installed prior to their openings. Metro has also been steadily installing bumpy tiles as it renovates older stations.
Of Metro's 86 stations, 68 have bumpy tiles installed, and another three stations currently have work underway that includes the installation of bumpy tiles. Of the remaining 15 stations, Metro staff has allocated the funding necessary and developed a plan that will result in the installation of bumpy tiles on all platforms at each of the 15 remaining stations by the end of 2014.
Three stations with work currently underway:
* Deanwood
* Eastern Market
* Potomac Avenue
15 stations to have Bumpy Domes installed by the end of 2014
* Arlington Cemetery
* Benning Road
* Braddock Road
* Capital Heights
* Clarendon
* Cleveland Park
* Eisenhower Avenue
* Forest Glen
* Grosvenor Strathmore
* Landover
* Minnesota Avenue
* Shaw - Howard Uni.
* Virginia Square - GMU
* Waterfront - SEU
