Hi Debbie,

A friend of the Sierra Leone Association OF the Blind (SLAB), Dr. Bob
Thomas, has offered to collect, store and prepare the white canes for
shipment to Freetown. You can contact him at: 703-503-9604 (Home).

I will be in the States for three weeks in June. I will be attending a
conference at the UN in New York from 10th to 12th June, after which I will
spend two weeks vacationing in Ohio and Maryland. I hope to return to
Freetown on or about June 28. Unfortunately, I won't be around for the
National Convention of the NFB. In any case, I will be with you guys in
spirit.

Fred.

I am not Fred, but I know that children's canes have been donated to a cane
bank after kids have outgrown them, but they are still useful. Thinking
about that, I will add some spare tips to my donation and suggest that we
think about that.

Do the canes have to be brand new?

Thanks, Debbie.

I will furnish you with more information as soon as I am able to work out
the logistics for collecting and storing the canes over there and their
eventual shipment to Freetown. I can assure you that the need for different
sizes of white canes is great. Some blind persons use either ordinary metal
rods or improvised walking sticks which are not at all standardized. The
Sierra Leone Association OF the Blind (SLAB) and my office, the National
Commission for Persons with Disability (NCPD) are working towards addressing
that issue. We will prepare a concept note that I will share with you.

I can certainly supply 10 canes as well. Unless you have ideas in mind of
specifically who they are fore, I would get various sizes. I would pick
adult sizes unless you asked for children's. Let us know what you want and
how many you can carry. If it is a lot, we would let more people know about
it.

For more expensive items, we would need some organization and a specific
fundraiser, and I would rather give it to a school or training center,
because we couldn't afford more than one.

you.

Hi Debbie,

I wish I could join you guys at the convention in July. I may be in the
U.S. about that time but I don't know exactly when and where. If possible,
I will try to make a brief stop over at the convention.

Meanwhile, I am still interested in getting some donated white canes for my
folks over here. I will ask my cousin to get in touch with you on that. If
you don't mind, I will give him your phone number to contact you.

I should also be very grateful if you could explore the possibility of
getting donated secondhand BrailleNotes or any similar devices.

Greetings to all at Sligo Creek.

Fred.

Just to let you know that if you go to the convention, this hotel has
refrigerators in all the rooms. You can take your medicine--or buy
groceries.

Debbie
