Hi all:
I live in Gaithersburg and wanted to get some training in JAWS. Is this the best option or are other options available? Thanks for your advice.

Adaptive Technology events and trainings for Spring 2015 will include JAWS training, Tech Talk Tuesdays, Friday Lunch and Learn, and a Job Club series of Saturday Technology Training Sessions.  Details and times for these events and trainings are listed below.

Keyboard and JAWS training will be held on Wednesdays and Thursdays at three levels, beginner, intermediate and advanced, from 10am to 11:15am, 11:30am to 12:45pm, and 2:00pm to 3:15pm respectively.  The beginner class focuses on the keyboard, the intermediate focuses on internet and word processing and the advanced class focus is determined by the students.  Classes start on January 14 and go for a 10 session curriculum and then start again on May 6th.  Call 202-727-2142 to sign up. There is a waiting list. All JAWS learners are welcome to visit the Adaptive Technology Workstation Lab Monday through Saturday at regular hours and use Typeability, the automatic typing tutorial that works with JAWS.

Every Friday from 12noon to 1pm, the Brown Bag Lunch and Learn in room 215 is an opportunity for all library customers interested in adaptive technology to socialize and share information on adaptive technologies, strategies and resources.  Bring your own lunch.  There will be no presentations. The meeting is open to everyone.

Tech Talk Tuesdays will happen every Tuesday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm and will include the following recurring topics: 1st Tuesdays: iOs and Android discussion and volunteer help sessions.  2nd Tuesday: Professional-level, employment-related meetup, 3rd Tuesday: Maker Meetup - discussion of accessibility and the MLK library’s new makerspaces, 4th Tuesday: Game Night including accessible chess, Uno, Bingo and other board and card games.

Saturday Technology Training Sessions (STTS) happen on the first and third Saturdays from 1pm to 4pm with a couple of exceptions for holidays.  These events feature discussion of Adaptive Technology issues and demos by participants.

The Spring 2015 series of STTS will be a Job Club that may be especially helpful to job seekers with disabilities, occurring in two 6-week sessions, from January 17 to April 4th and then again from April 18th to July 18th. The Job Club will be an opportunity for job seekers to support each other, network, and work towards employment, as well as learn about business incubation opportunities. The structure will include presentations, group discussion and breakout sessions.  Each meeting will start with a presentation and group discussion on a pre-selected topic, listed below.  After group discussion there will be time for individual work in our Adaptive Workstation Lab, with one-on-one help as much as is possible, and facilitated break-out groups.

The Job Club topics will be as follows:

Jan 17th – Adaptive and Social Technologies

Feb 7th – What are my skills?  What do I like to do?

Feb 21st – Marketing strategies (Business Cards, Resume, Elevator pitch)

March 7th – Job searching – Agencies, Online, Cold Calls

March 21st – Interviews – Dress for success, mock interviews
