** Independence Market Needs You

Come one, come all to the Independence Market at national convention! Yes, we do want you to come see what is new in the market and buy to your heart’s content, but we are calling out for another reason as well. We need people to volunteer to work in the market during convention. The market is open Wednesday through Saturday: Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday from 12:00 to 1:45 p.m.. We need help during the Wednesday and Thursday hours. Do you have some hours during the week that you could spare to volunteer? We would love to have you. You can contact Patricia Maurer (extension 2272) or Jenivieve White (extension 2236) by telephone at (410) 659-9314, or email communityrelations at nfb.org<mailto:communityrelations at nfb.org> or jwhite at nfb.org<mailto:jwhite at nfb.org>.

** Looking for Job Seekers and Employers

Blind people make great employees: hardworking, dependable, and creative. One of the easiest ways to find capable blind employees is through our annual National Federation of the Blind job fair, which will be held on Tuesday, July 1, 2014 from 2:00-4:00 p.m. Employers can sign up by contacting Dick Davis, Employment Committee chair, at ddavis at blindinc.org<mailto:ddavis at blindinc.org>, or Robert Leslie Newman, vice-chair, at newmanrl at cox.net<mailto:newmanrl at cox.net>. Include your organization’s name, address, and zip code, name of individual(s) who will be representing you, and their titles and contact information (phone and e-mail).

** UBER

On-demand transportation can be arranged via the UBER smartphone app. Download the free app in the iPhone or Android app store and register with promo code NFB2014 for a free first ride up to $20. When you are ready to be picked up, open the app, confirm your location, and your driver will arrive within minutes. No tip is expected, no reservations are needed, and payment is always cashless. Register an Uber account at uber.com/go/NFB2014<http://nfb.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=3542&qid=493167>. Questions? Discounted rates are $16 one way and $28 roundtrip, per person, to the Rosen Centre, but vary based on hotel location. Exclusive sedans, SUVs, and vans are also available. The rate for an exclusive van (eight passengers) is $100 or $12.5 per person, one way. Book your transportation on the SuperShuttle website<http://nfb.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=3543&qid=493167>. To make reservations for large groups, call (407) 513-0225.

** 3DPhotoWorks

3DPhotoWorks is a technology company that seeks your feedback on a new patent-pending process that creates photographic prints for the blind and sight impaired. 3D photographic prints have length, width, depth, and texture and offer tactile feedback. The company seeks your help evaluating the product and determining how it can be valuable to the blind. They are located in booth C23 in the exhibit area.

** Research Study

The Neuroplasticity and Development Lab invites participants to take part in research studies at the 2014 National Federation of the Blind Convention. The studies involve listening to sentences, listening to tones, reading Braille, and answering questions. The goal of this research is to better understand how visual and nonvisual experiences contribute to cognition.

There are two studies. You can choose to participate in either one or both of these studies. Each study takes two hours and participants are compensated $60 for taking part in each study. Prior to scheduling a study appointment, we ask that you complete a prescreening interview over the phone to ensure that you qualify. Among the qualification criteria, participants must be congenitally and totally blind and between eighteen and fifty years of age. The screening interview takes between fifteen to thirty minutes. Those who take part in the interview will receive a $15 Amazon gift certificate. To find out if you qualify and to sign up for an appointment, please contact us by either calling (410) 870-9895, or emailing plasticity_lab at jhu.edu<mailto:plasticity_lab at jhu.edu>.
