[Md-sligo] FW: Take Action - Sign a petition to restore early voting site

Please take action to restore two early voting sites in Montgomery county.

The Montgomery County Board of Elections recently appointed by Governor Hogan voted to shift two heavily used early voting sites to less populous locations. One of the sites, the Marilyn J. Praisner Recreation Center, served high poverty east county along U.S. 29 and was the second highest performing site, with the highest concentration of minority voters. Voting will now be 13 miles away from that location at the Longwood Community Recreation Center.

The panel also shifted early balloting from the Jane Lawton Community Recreation Center in Chevy Chase, about a half-mile from the Bethesda Metro station, to the Potomac Community Recreation Center, on Falls Road, 10 miles to the northwest, with no metro access and located in a low traffic area. The Lawton location served a high number of elderly voters.

County Councilmember Tom Hucker expressed outrage about the decision, call the decision "naked voter suppression that will make it harder for thousands of working families and minorities in his district to exercise their right to vote."

Unlike on Election Day, when voters must go to their assigned precincts, early voting sites are open to all voters in the county. More than 8,000 people cast early ballots at the Lawton and Praisner centers in the 2014 general election, more than 20 percent of Montgomery’s total early voting.
