Here is fare information for the Alexandria Metroway. I can’t guarantee yet that MetroAccess users can get a free ride, because that is determined by whether it is considred a commuter service. I will check on that.

Debbie,
Excellent, I will plan to meet you right outside the fare gates at the Crystal City Metro station. The service is run by WMATA, so SmarTrip and all Metro farecard types should work. This is what the website says about fares:

Fares
$1.75 using a SmarTrip® card or cash
85¢ using Senior SmarTrip® card or cash (with proper ID) for seniors and people with disabilities

See you at 10am on Saturday.

We will have about 8 people. We are meeteing at the Metro outside the fare gate. I have not checked the website. I need to see what the fare is, and is a Smartrip card accepted? Also, I know we have some people who have conditional MetroAccess eligibility, which means that they can ride Metrobus and rail free, as well as other local bus services. I don’t know if the bus-rapid transit is covered. If not, I will need to let people know.

Just wanted to confirm with you that we will be meeting at the Crystal City Metro at 10am this Saturday January 16. Do you know how many of your group members will be attending?

Thanks,
Geri

Debbie,
We're confirmed for January 16 at 10am. Right now, I've got Casey Anderson (chair of the Planning Board) confirmed and I'm working on getting a confirmation from Lee Farmer, who helped bring the Alexandria Metroway to fruition.

Can you relay this information to your group?

Thanks,
Geri

January 16 or 23 would work. I’d say about 10:00 would be fine.

Debbie,
That's a really good point. How about a Saturday morning in January? It may be cold, but we can start the conversation underground at the Crystal City Metro, if necessary, continue it on the bus, and get off and explore one of the nicer bus stops for one or two bus cycles (maybe 15-20 minutes). We can then ride it to the Braddock Road Metro (above ground station) or ride it back in the direction we came to finish the conversation back underground in Crystal City. Our route and timeline can depend on how cold the weather is, but I'd like to be able to start this accessibility conversation soon instead of waiting until spring. What do you think? Would January 16 or 23 work?

I've got Casey Anderson, the chair of the Planning Board, on board for the tour, and he will extend the conversation to other staff at the planning department. I'm not sure we'll be able to get any elected officials there, but the planners will definitely be excellent people to talk to on this topic. I'm also trying to get some of the folks from the city of Alexandria who facilitated the building of the Alexandria Metroway.

Saturday morning would work. We work all over the place, so some of us would have to work to get to Alexandria in a timely manner. If we do a weekday, we should probably do it at 6:00, because some buses stop running pretty early.

Debbie,
I know I've dropped the ball on making the tour of the Alexandria Metroway happen in a timely manner, but it's definitely still on my radar. I've gotten confirmation that Casey Anderson, the chair of the Planning Board, wants to attend, and the invitation is now being circulated to some other people at the Planning Department. I haven't heard back from any County Councilmembers yet. Would a weekday tour work for most of the members of your group? It seems we'll be much more likely to get the government folks out on a weekday than a weekend, although I'm sure we could get at least one or two out on a Saturday morning. Which makes more sense to you?

Thanks,
Geri

Debbie,
It was my pleasure. I had a wonderful time talking to your group, and your questions did a great job of keeping me on my toes! I've already mentioned this to Brian, but if you or any other group members would like to sign up to speak at the September 30 Transit Task Force public forum (at the Council Office Building in Rockville), you can sign up tomorrow.

Sign-ups will open Wednesday 9/16 at 9am, and they will likely be gone in a hurry. To sign up, you must call 240-777-7165<tel:240-777-7165>. My coworker and I can help you understand the topics being discussed (mostly finance) so that you can draft your testimony. If you or anyone else would like to participate, please let me know if you sign up. We need as many folks as we can get so we can get some new voices into the conversation!

I'm going to get in touch with some of the county planners and possibly some of the county councilmembers so we can come up with a date to visit Alexandria when we know people within the government can actually join the conversation. After the Jewish holidays and the September 30 public forum, I'll be traveling for the first half of October, so I'm going to aim to organize this field trip for mid- to late-October. I'll let you know as soon as I get some responses.

Have a wonderful day,

Geri

Thank you for talking to the National Federation of the Blind Sligo Creek Chapter on Saturday. It generated a lot of interest.

We really would like to go on a tour of the Alexandria system. Please let us know when you are able to meet with us. If the system runs on Saturday that would be good, but a weekday or evening would also work. After we have looked at it for ourselves, we can decide how to proceed with some of our pedestrian concerns.

Thank you for giving us a clear and knowledgeable explanation of bus rapid transit. We hope to continue working with you in the future.
