The National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) is proud to
participate in National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), an
annual campaign that takes place each October. NDEAM aims to educate about
disability employment issues and celebrate the many contributions of
America's workers with disabilities. This year's theme is
"#InclusionWorks," which reflects on the important role each of us plays in
fostering a workplace that embraces individual differences, including
disabilities. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability
Employment Policy <https://www.dol.gov/odep/> created this year’s theme
with the hope that the hashtag spurs both individuals and groups to post
images and stimulate discussion on social media about the many ways
“inclusion works.”

*Background*

In 1945, congress enacted a law declaring the first week in October each
year "National Employ the Physically Handicapped Week", which evolved into
NDEAM. To acknowledge the employment needs and contributions of individuals
with all types of disabilities, the word "physically" was removed in 1963.
In 1988, Congress expanded the week to a month and changed the title to
National Disability Employment Awareness Month.

*Disability Related Records at NARA*

NARA is proud to preserve and protect our nation’s records, which include
disability related records. A sample includes:

   Blinded Veterans Association <https://catalog.archives.gov/id/6087938>.

an Employee Affinity Group (EAG) designed to connect and share experiences
about disabilities. The mission of disABILITY is to bring awareness and
resolution to the challenges facing individuals with disabilities in the
workplace and seek to assist them with career advancement. The group is
open to everyone. For more information on how to get involved, contact
