Subject: Metrorail construction will impact Red Line Service

NIH Transhare Member,

The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) has announced major construction on the Red Line. According to our Transhare records, you may be impacted by this major capital improvement project. Please read the below Metro alert thoroughly and plan accordingly.

Red Line: No trains between Silver Spring & Fort Totten, Takoma Station Closed November 25 - December 10

Beginning on Saturday, November 25 through Sunday, December 10, there will be no Red Line trains operating between Silver Spring and Fort Totten, and Takoma station will be closed to undertake a major capital improvement project. The work will involve the complete replacement a mainline interlocking, a location where trains cross from one track to the other.

Red Line weekday train service will operate as follows:

* Between Glenmont and Silver Spring every 12 minutes.
* Between Shady Grove and Fort Totten every 10 minutes (between Grosvenor and Gallaudet U every 5 minutes during weekday peak periods).
* Limited free shuttle buses will be provided as an option between Silver Spring, Takoma and Fort Totten stations for riders with no other travel alternative. Customers should allow additional travel time.
* After 9:30 p.m., trains will operate every 15 minutes.

On the weekend of December 2-3:

 * No Red Line trains between Fort Totten and Glenmont. Limited free shuttle buses will be provided between Fort Totten, Takoma, Silver Spring, Forest Glen, Wheaton, and Glenmont.

**NOTE** Shuttle buses may be extremely crowded and customers may need to wait for multiple buses due to long lines. Metro riders who have the ability to do so should consider alternate travel options and avoid traveling during rush hour if possible. All customers using shuttle buses must tap their SmarTrip card when exiting the station and tap again when re-entering the Metrorail system. You will only be charged for a single trip. Customers with trips originating at a closed station need only tap upon entering the Metrorail system.

For more information about this track work and a full list of travel alternatives, please visit: https://www.wmata.com/service/2017-Red-Line-Capital-Improvement-Project.cfm.

NIH PARKING

For those riders severely impacted and unable to find alternative mass transit options, the NIH Employee Transportation Services Office (ETSO, also known as the NIH Parking Office) will offer temporary parking permits during this project. These permits will be available for pick up at the ETSO during normal business hours, 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM, Monday-Friday, excluding federal holidays.

Please note, that in order to receive a temporary permit for this project, you must be originating or terminating at one of the stations that are directly impacted. All other stations should be operating at normal times/frequencies.

We understand that this will be a difficult transit time for you. For questions, concerns and comments, please do not hesitate to contact the ETSO at nihparkingoffice at ors.od.nih.gov<mailto:nihparkingoffice at ors.od.nih.gov> or (301) 496-5050.
