in Silver Spring will reopen

ROCKVILLE, Md., March 28, 2018-On April 2 at 10 a.m. Council Vice President Nancy Navarro, who serves as chair of the Council's Government Operations and Fiscal Policy Committee and is a member of the Education Committee, will join County Executive Isiah Leggett, her Council colleagues, community leaders and residents to reopen the White Oak Library, which is located at 11701 New Hampshire Avenue in Silver Spring. The White Oak Library has been closed temporarily for renovations. Council Vice President Navarro requested the refresh of this library after hearing from residents of District 4 who used that library.

"I am delighted that the White Oak community will have their newly refurbished library back," said Council Vice President Navarro. "Libraries are community hubs where residents can participate in educational activities for children, teens and seniors, stay connected using the latest technology or just enjoy a great book."

Residents visiting the renovated White Oak Library can expect to enjoy a newly redesigned interior, new furniture, renovated restrooms, laptop computers that can be loaned out and two community collaboration rooms that can be reserved for community use. Some of the structural upgrades include a new roof, new plumbing, LED lighting and parking lot improvements.

"One of the best parts of my job is seeing a project that I advocated for on behalf of the community become a reality, said Council Vice President Navarro. "In 2014 I requested that the White Oak Library and Aspen Hill Library be included as part of the County's 21st Century Library Enhancements Project. Given the future development planned for the White Oak area and the needs of students from Springbrook High School, White Oak Middle School and Jackson Road Elementary School, the White Oak Library is a critical community resource for area residents."

The 21st Century Library Enhancements Project is part of the capital budget for Montgomery County Public Libraries. The project was established to allow libraries to respond to customer demands and library trends that require changes in the equipment and furnishings in libraries across the County.

"I want to thank Friends of the Library in White Oak for working with the County on this project and for their ongoing support of library funding," said Council Vice President Navarro. "I also welcome Angelisa Hawes, White Oak Library branch manager, back to her home away from home."
