Subject: [Nfbnet-members-list] Intro to Mastodon for NFB Members:
Monday September 25, 4 PM Eastern
To: nfbnet-members-list at nfbnet.org

Have you heard? NFB divisions, groups and state affiliates can now create
Mastodon accounts on the NFB.social domain. Members and friends are invited
and encouraged to get to know Mastodon and use it to keep up with division,
group and affiliate happenings.
Mastodon is a social network whose popularity is increasing in the wake of
changes to other platforms. Unlike commercially owned social networks,
Mastodon is de-centralized: individuals and organizations can choose an
existing server to join or run their own, and everyone can communicate
freely with people on other servers, a lot like email. Mastodon also has a
rich accessibility culture, with alt text prevalent on photos and a
thriving community of accessibility-minded people and organizations.
Mastodon is free, accessible, and non-commercial, but has a lot in common
with social networks you might already know well. The NFB Assistive
Technology Trainers' Division is pleased to offer a Mastodon training to
get you up and running, where you'll learn about:
Discovering and following accounts and hashtags
Crafting posts with text, photos, links, polls and other media
Understanding how servers work and choosing your first server
Understanding and reading timelines
Boosting and favoriting posts
Peace and quiet: snoozes, mutes and blocks
Ways to access Mastodon using accessible apps or your web browser
Plus, hear from the NFB Communications team about how your division, group
or affiliate can get started with an nfb.social account!
This event starts at 4 PM Eastern on Monday September 25 and will run for
about 90 minutes. Register here:
