Each year, my office provides tens of thousands of dollars in scholarships for students attending undergraduate and graduate institutions of higher education.

This new scholarship will assist displaced federal workers and contractors, as well as their spouses and dependents, with paying for the cost of higher education.  This includes applicants who worked for a federal agency or for a federal contractor and been laid off, terminated, subject to reduction in force, or taken a buyout or early retirement.  This scholarship is also open to the spouse of a displaced federal worker or contractor and for dependent children whose parent is a displaced federal worker or contractor.

District 17 Town Hall

Your state legislators will hold a town hall to debrief on the recently completed state legislative session.

This is your opportunity to engage with your elected officials and to ask questions.

Some State Parks to Require RSVP

Certain state parks that receive many visitors will start requiring advance reservations.  The new policy goes into effect on May 19th at Greenbrier State Park in Boonsboro and Sandy Point State Park in Annapolis and will expand to other state parks later this summer.

“The goal of this new  <https://juliepalakovichcarr.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6eca5fb9f212127bb083f617&id=b5da5b230b&e=d37a141d0c> day use reservation system is making our parks more welcoming and accessible to all,” said Maryland Park Service Director Angela Crenshaw. “By allowing visitors to plan ahead, we’re helping families make the most of their time outdoors — with less stress and more confidence that they’ll have a great day in our state parks.”

With the new system, advance reservations are mandatory on weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day—no same-day drive-up access will be allowed.  Reservations must be made online and can be made starting seven days in advance of a visit.  Reservations may be edited or canceled until 8 am the day before the visit.

Bike to Work Day

The DC metro area will hold Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 15th.  The first 18,000 who  <https://juliepalakovichcarr.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6eca5fb9f212127bb083f617&id=ad003bfb2e&e=d37a141d0c> register and attend one of 100+ pit stops (including multiple in Montgomery County) will receive a free T-shirt.  Register and you'll also be entered into a raffle for a chance to win a free bike.  I'll be participating again this year!

Gaithersburg Book Festival

Join in the fun at the Gaithersburg Book Festival on Saturday, May 17, 10 am - 6 pm.  This is a fabulous free event at Bohrer Park where you can hear from more than 130 featured authors, including Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson and Pulitzer Prize-winning humor columnist Dave Barry. Community Happenings

I was honored to be recognized as one of Maryland's Top 100 Women by The Daily Record!  It is such an honor to be in this accomplished group of women, including Rockville Mayor Monique Ashton.

I again participated in Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, by reading names of people who were murdered in the Holocaust.   <https://juliepalakovichcarr.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6eca5fb9f212127bb083f617&id=6eeb10995a&e=d37a141d0c> The video commemoration is online.

Local non-profit Identity celebrated the ribbon cutting of their new headquarters and community center.  The project was made possible, in part, with $1 million in funding from the State of Maryland.  The District 17 and 39 legislators worked together to make this funding possible for this Gaithersburg-based organization.
