Hello, BlindShell friends,

Before we get started with the usual intro, we have some great news for you! You no longer have to press buttons to read your emails continuously, just download the latest version of the email client and your messages will be read automatically. 🙂

How did you like the introduction of our team? In the last issue, we invited you to visit our social networks, where you can now find complete "child portraits" of all our departments. We wanted to symbolically welcome the start of the new school year in this playful way.

However, October is significant not only for schoolchildren, but also for the entire blind community. We commemorate several important days, World Sight Day, which emphasizes the importance of prevention and eye care and International White Cane Day. You can read more about all these events in the final section.

** News, Updates, Apps

** In September, our team focused not only on products but also on internal systems. On Thursday, September 11, we performed brief maintenance on BlindShell Server, which we hope you hardly noticed. This maintenance is necessary to ensure the reliable and smooth operation of our services. Thank you for your understanding! 🙂

** In September, we updated the following for you:

Be My Eyes - Fixed the "Call a volunteer" feature on the Classic 2 model.
Facebook Messenger - The app required an update.
RSS reader - Fixed issues with manually adding channels.
Weather - Fixed inconsistencies in displaying the weather icon and current weather conditions. Changed the data source for the UV index.
Whatsapp - The app required an update.
Email client - The above mentioned change to automatic email reading. However, if you want to pause the email, just press the right action button. To restart reading, hold down the number 8, as was the case before this update.

** Did you know...? Tips and Tricks

** ... only 2% of the population has green eyes? And also that roughly 1-2% of people have different colored eyes?

Why is that?
At first glance, it seems that there are countless eye colors. In reality, however, they can all be derived from a few main colors: brown, blue, and green. Other shades (gray, amber, or hazel) are just combinations of these. Brown eyes are the most common, found in about 70 to 80% of people worldwide. Sometimes, a person has one blue eye and one brown eye. This rare phenomenon is called heterochromia and affects about 1-2% of people. It can be congenital (due to genetics) or acquired, for example after an injury or due to certain diseases. Interestingly, different-colored eyes are quite common in Huskies, for example. This makes them look even more attractive and their gaze is enchanting!
The picture shows a little boy and a Husky dog sitting in front of him. The photo focuses closely on their faces; both have brown left eyes and light blue right eyes. The photo refers to the article on heterochromia above.

This is an interesting fact that we wanted to share with you. However, Classic 3 users can easily obtain this information thanks to Luna, which will search for the information for you and more. After reading this section, some of you may be interested in what a Husky actually looks like.
Luna will give you a nice description of this dog breed! :)

** Inspiration and information from the blind community

🍂 Autumn not only brings colorful leaves and the scent of pumpkins, but also reminds us of important days dedicated to vision and independence. October 10 is World Sight Day, raising awareness of eye care and prevention, followed closely by International White Cane Day on October 15, a key moment for the blind community.

These days highlight both the importance of accessibility and the power of public support. In the Czech Republic, this spirit is embodied by the nationwide White Crayon collection, where volunteers raise funds for people who are blind or visually impaired. Does your country have a similar tradition?

We have found a few more interesting facts from around the world for you.

“Cane-A-Thon (https://donation.hkbu.org.hk/en/project/20?utm_source=BlindShell+contacts&utm_campaign=f2e0ab846e-September+monthly+newsletter+-+com_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8f8599944c-f2e0ab846e-461634675) ” / Hong Kong Blind Union
In Hong Kong, charity walks are organized in connection with International White Cane Day – participants walk a route, complete challenges (e.g., blindfolded, with partial vision impairment), and the proceeds go to support people with visual impairments.

In the US, fundraising campaigns are run in connection with White Cane Day – e.g., the sale of T-shirts, with the proceeds going to organizations supporting The Veering Cane project (https://www.customink.com/fundraising/white-cane-day-2025?utm_source=BlindShell+contacts&utm_campaign=f2e0ab846e-September+monthly+newsletter+-+com_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8f8599944c-f2e0ab846e-461634675) .

The Malta Society for the Blind runs a “White Cane Awareness Month (https://gogetfunding.com/white-cane-awareness-month/?utm_source=BlindShell+contacts&utm_campaign=f2e0ab846e-September+monthly+newsletter+-+com_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_8f8599944c-f2e0ab846e-461634675) ” campaign in October, calling for donations and raising awareness of the problems faced by the visually impaired.

We hope to spread greater awareness of these events. While many BlindShell users may already be familiar with them, relatives and others interested in our community might discover something new — and perhaps be inspired to support a collection or share the information further.

Do you have any recommendations or specific questions about what you'd like to see in the next Newsletter?

And if you enjoy the Monthly Newsletter, feel free to recommend it to your friends so they don’t miss out on useful tips and the latest BlindShell updates! 😊
