potentially lethal illness primarily found in West and Central <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><st1:place w:st="on"><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span
style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>Africa</span></font></st1:place><font
color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>. At
present, the largest outbreak in history is impacting <st1:place w:st="on">West
Africa</st1:place> with the countries of <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><st1:country-region w:st="on"><font size=3 color=black
face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>Sierra
Leone</span></font></st1:country-region><font color=black face=Tahoma><span
style='font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>, <st1:country-region w:st="on">Liberia</st1:country-region>,
and <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place w:st="on">Guinea</st1:place></st1:country-region>
most impacted. In October 2014, the first confirmed human case <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>of EVD in the <st1:country-region w:st="on">United
States</st1:country-region>, a traveler from <st1:country-region w:st="on">Liberia</st1:country-region>,
was identified in <st1:place w:st="on"><st1:City w:st="on">Dallas</st1:City>, <st1:State
w:st="on">Texas</st1:State></st1:place>. While Ebola <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>represents a significant global public
health threat, the risk to those living in the <st1:country-region w:st="on"><st1:place
w:st="on">United States</st1:place></st1:country-region> is <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>limited and can be further reduced by
following basic steps as established by the U.S. Centers for <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and
summarized below. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>Symptoms <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>The initial symptoms of Ebola appear
between 2 to 21 days after exposure (average 8-10 days) and <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>are consistent with those observed in
many other illnesses. These include fever, nausea, headache <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>and weakness. However, these symptoms
become more severe over time and can include severe <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>headache, muscle pain, vomiting,
diarrhea, abdominal (stomach) pain, or unexplained <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>hemorrhage. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>Transmission <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>Ebola virus is transmitted through
exposure to the fluids of an infected person. It is NOT spread <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>through the air, water or food. It is
critical to note that only infected persons that are already <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>showing symptoms are infectious. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>My recommendations for staff are simple.
If they have no reason to suspect exposure to Ebola, <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>then they should continue following the
standard good hygiene practices as they would during any <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>other flu season. This would include
frequent hand washing with soap and water, use of hand <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>sanitizers, covering coughs with a
sleeve or disposable tissue (avoid touching eyes, nose and <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>mouth with hands), staying home when
sick, avoiding others who are visibly physically ill and <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class=MsoNormal><font size=3 color=black face=Tahoma><span style='font-size:
12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>frequent cleaning of surfaces such as

12.0pt;font-family:Tahoma;color:black'>avoid physical contact with the person
and his/her bodily fluids and notify health personnel. <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
