Do you get books from BARD? It will look like bragging, but I suggest a<br>
booklet I wrote called "Care and Feeding of the Long White Cane." It is<br>
basic instructions on cane travel. I wrote it while living in the Maryland<br>
suburbs. The section on subways, escalators and elevators is largely based<br>
on my experience in the D.C. METRO. I have been riding METRO alone and with<br>
others since the day it opened in 1966. I know you can't learn how to travel<br>
out of a book any more than you can learn to drive a car from a book, but<br>
you can learn about it and get a good idea of how to start. The book is also<br>
available in large print from the NFB Independence Market for free or from<br>
me for free if you send me a mailing address or wait until the next chapter<br>
meeting. You don't have to be blind to get or read the booklet. The trouble<br>
is that we would have to get together, and would that mean using the METRO<br>
to get to the meeting?<br>

The reason I call it a "booklet" is because it is short.  The print book is<br>
in large type and is about 60 pages for the whole thing, and the section on<br>
METRO is a short section. The recorded version takes an hour and forty<br>
minutes to listen to.I suggest the print book for your family members so<br>
they might have a broader concept than their immediate concerns.Most of the<br>
low vision specialists that I have heard make presentations concentrate on<br>
using what little sight you have remaining. They usually do not think of<br>
using other techniques<br>

     The NFB will send you a free white cane on the idea that we think any<br>
blind person in the country who wants a cane should have one. "Blind" does<br>
not mean totally without light perception. It means that you need to use<br>
another way to get things done, other than looking with your eyes.  A large<br>
percent of NFB members have some sight.<br>

Debbie:  I think I will need a White Caine in the short near future because<br>
my eye doctor has prescribed eye glasses.  To me that means that my sight<br>
has diminished.  I have an appointment with a low vision specialist on<br>
2/17/2016 to further access my sight.   I did not attend the chapter meeting<br>
because family members did not think I was ready to start traveling on metro<br>
alone.<br>
