<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">The Neuroplasticity and Development Lab at Johns Hopkins University is seeking participants </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">for an MRI research study on cognition. We study how the brain adapts in the absence of vision </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">and supports audition, touch, Braille reading and language. To answer this question we use </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">neuroimaging to compare the brains of individuals with different life histories: adults who grew </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">up with vision, those who were born blind, and those who became blind later in life.</span></p>
<p><br><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">Participating in studies involves listening to stories and sounds, feeling Braille or everyday </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">objects, and answering questions about what you hear and feel. Some of the studies involve </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">brain imaging with MRI, while others measure only behavior. The MRI studies take place at </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD, whereas studies outside the scanner measuring </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">behavior can potentially take place at other locations. For behavioral studies, participants are </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">compensated $20 per hour, and for MRI studies, participants are compensated $30 per hour for </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">their time. Regardless of location, travel costs to and from the study site are covered by the </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">laboratory. If a sufficient number of eligible participants from a local area are interested, we </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">may invite participants to complete studies outside the scanner locally. Alternatively, we may </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">invite participants to travel to Johns Hopkins University and complete MRI studies in the </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">scanner as well as behavioral studies outside the scanner. For these sessions, participation </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">involves coming into the laboratory for one to three computer task sessions, and completing </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">one to three MRI scanning sessions, each lasting between one and three hours. If participants </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">are invited to travel to Johns Hopkins University, the laboratory will cover participants’ lodging </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">for up to 3 nights in addition to travel costs.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">To qualify you must be a healthy totally blind adult with at most minimal light perception who </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">has been blind from birth and is currently between 18 and 70 years-of-age and has no </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">neurological disabilities. Before taking part in the study, participants are invited to complete a </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">pre-screening interview over the phone to see whether they qualify. The screening interview </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">takes approximately 30 minutes. Those who complete the screening interview receive a </span><span style="font-family: Verdana, Geneva, sans-serif;">$15Amazon gift card.
