<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The Library for the Blind and Print Disabled will be undergoing a project to replace the current light fixtures throughout the building with new energy efficient fixtures. The project is scheduled for January through February. LBPD will remain open throughout the project and we'll continue to send and receive materials, but certain areas will be unavailable at times. This includes the public areas for walk-in service and classes. There also may be minor delays for certain materials as the contractors work on floors where our collection is shelved. The reference desk will also be affected at times, so please leave a message and we'll get back to you within 24 hours on any business day. Even with these potential delays, please continue to return materials to us when you have read them so we can fill more of your requests. Please call LBPD at 410-230-2443 before you come to the library for a visit or a class, or if you need assistance with materials. <p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Happy New Year to all of our patrons, caregivers and partners throughout the state of Maryland!</p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">2024 was a memorable year for the Maryland State Library for the Blind and Print Disabled. Here are some of the highlights:</p>
<ul style="font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<li aria-level="1">LBPD was named the National Library Service’s Regional Library of the Year. </li>
<li aria-level="1">Youth Services Librarian LaShawn Myles was named a <em>Library Journal</em> Mover and Shaker.</li>
<li aria-level="1">Assistive Technology Education Coordinator Jerry Price was named a Digital Ambassador Honorable Mention by Marylanders Online.</li>
<li aria-level="1">The Maryland State Library Agency, of which LBPD is a division, saw Irene Padilla retire as State Librarian and welcomed Morgan Lehr Miller as the new State Librarian. Irene was a strong advocate for the work of LBPD and Morgan is following that example.</li>
<li aria-level="1">LBPD began circulating the Magazine on Cartridge subscriptions. This service, which was previously managed by NLS for all patrons nationwide, is now managed by each individual state’s network library. Please feel free to contact us with any questions about the magazine service.</li>
<li aria-level="1">LBPD implemented the NLS-required Parental Acknowledgements for patrons under the age of 18 and institutions that primarily serve patrons under the age of 18. All new applications must have this acknowledgment on file. For existing patrons, an addendum with the acknowledgment must be signed and on file with LBPD. Please contact us if you have not completed this acknowledgement on your child’s behalf so that we can continue to best serve all of our patrons.</li>
<li aria-level="1">Outreach and Marketing Librarian Ashley Biggs participated in an Inclusion Showcase and a Digital Equity webinar to raise awareness of LBPD services.</li>
</ul>
<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">In 2025, we anticipate even more exciting events:</p>
<ul style="font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">
<li aria-level="1">We will be co-hosting a Diversity Inclusion and Access in Libraries Conference with the State Library Resource Center in May to raise awareness for library staff.</li>
<li aria-level="1">We will be co-hosting a Dyslexia Summit with the Maryland State Department of Education in October to raise awareness around a population that many do not know is served by LBPD.</li>
<li aria-level="1">We anticipate the beginning of refurbishments to the library as well as facility improvements like repaired sidewalks, new energy-efficient lighting, and new elevators.</li>
</ul>

<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Are you looking for more large print from the Maryland Library for the Blind and Print Disabled (LBPD)? Here are several ways to obtain more large print books. </p>
<p style="margin-bottom: 1.0em; font: 13px/1.5 Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Youth can access MARINA, a search engine of library catalogs, to locate large print titles across Maryland. MARINA enables Maryland public library cardholders to borrow items in public library collections around the state and have the borrowed items delivered to them at their local public library branch. Items can not be delivered to Maryland LBPD or mailed to your home. This Large Print Lending Program offers large print titles to youth patrons of other network libraries. Maryland youth patrons can request up to 5 books at a time. The books can be mailed directly to the patron. Youth patrons can request individual titles or can be set up for automatic selection to receive books regularly. Unfamiliar with NYC’s milieu of mob bosses and crooked officials, Cain’s investigation stalls, until a strange man who calls himself Danziger enters his life. Danziger looks like a miscreant, but speaks five languages, has the manners of a gentleman, and is the one person who can help Cain identify the body. A letter writer for illiterate European immigrants, Danzinger has a seemingly boundless knowledge of the city’s denizens and networks – and possesses information that extends beyond the reach of his clients.</p>
