Hi Maureen,

My name is William Jacobs and I work here at the National Center for the
Blind. I consulted with Anil Lewis who has been on the scholarship
board for the NFB for many years as to a suggestion and he suggested to
contact Cary Supalo at the following email address:

Cas380 at psu.edu

I will refer this email to Natalie Shaheen also for any input from her.
Best wishes and good luck.

Hello Maureen,
I am totally blind, and when I took biology I actually hired a lab
assistant
to help me. I used money from Wisconsin's Department of Vocational
Rehabilitation (the same as DORS in Maryland) to pay this
reader/assistant.
This person was a biology major herself, and had taken the class I was
taking before. She was truly my eyes during the lab. She described
what
she saw in the microscope--although we didn't use a microscope much
actually, helped me with the dissection of a rat, and described anything
else visual that was going on in the class. She used a raised line
drawing
board in order to draw things for me I could feel. This was a good
arrangement because I did not need to rely on other students in the
class to
do anything special or extra for me. My professors did what they could
to
help with visual things, and explained a lot verbally and with models I
could feel whenever possible. The assistant really helped though. Just
some thoughts.
Melissa

Hi,
My son, in college, will be taking biology next semester. He has some
vision yet, but I know he'll have a hard time seeing anything in the
microscope. Does anyone have any suggestions for successful
accommodations in a science lab? Thanks so much, Maureen Austen
