[Mdpobc] FW: LBPH Summer Reading Program

Also, many public libraries have very similar programs. When I was young, way back in the stone age, the public library in my home town gave out a free ticket to the zoo to any kid who read at least 800 minutes furing the summer. They had other programs and reading parties as well, with different themes and prizes each year. Obviously, the zoo one really stuck with me, especially since I was very proud of myself for reading that 800 minutes. It helped that a couple of my friends were doing it as well, so we would take about a half hour out of our day and read together. Sometimes to each other, and sometimes to ourselves. It's making me smile just to think about this. :)
Anyway, now that I have my own kids, we are going to the public library on Tuesday, my son's official first day of summer, to sign him and his sisters up for the reading program. We'll probably sign his sisters up for the LBPH program as well.
So, please check into the public library programs in VA for your student. Nothing says she has to read print books in order to participate in a public library program!
Happy reading!
Melissa

I think this is only for MD kids. When I participated only kids who were patrons of the library at the time were eligible. However, many libraries for the blind have similar programs, so perhaps the VA library will have one in which she can enroll.

Is this just for MD kids? I teach in Fairfax Co VA and one of my students would really benefit from this challenge. If not, maybe I'll try to make up something similar for her.
Thanks

Join MD LBPH this summer for our six-week Summer Reading program: Fizz Boom Read!
All you have to do is read for at least 15 minutes every day. You can read to yourself, a dog, friend, family member, even a stuffed animal! Listening to someone else read counts, too. Your book can be in any format: audio, Braille, or large print.
Keep track of the number of days read from June 23-August 9. Once you’ve read for 30 days, contact Lori Guenthner, Youth Services Coordinator, by phone, 410-230-2457, or email, lguenth at lbph.lib.md.us <mailto:lguenth at lbph.lib.md.us> .
Once you have read for 30 days, you earn your FREE t-shirt and a chance to win 4 tickets to the Maryland Science Center. Keep reading! Every 5 days you read beyond 30 gets you another chance to win the tickets.
To enroll, send an email to lguenth at lbph.lib.md.us <mailto:lguenth at lbph.lib.md.us> with your child's name, address, and age. A packet containing a reading log, as well as activities and games, will be mailed to the child’s address.
