Hello parents,
November is upon us! I hope you are having a great fall and getting in the groove of the school year. I wanted to start a monthly note to you all to keep you up to date on what is happening across the state. At the end of this email is a list of events that can all be found on the TVI Portal<https://sites.google.com/view/tviportalmaryland/calendar>. If you at any time want to add any event to the portal, please just email me. Feel free to skim this email and jump to the information that is most relevant to you and share with your others.

Braille Challenge: Out of this world
February 8, Maryland School for the Blind #LiftOffBC2020
Start getting your kids excited for The Maryland Braille Challenge! It is an academic competition for students who are blind or low vision braille readers. Braille Institute developed the Braille Challenge to motivate students to practice and hone their braille literacy skills, which are essential to academic and employment success. Any blind or low vision student in grades 1 - 12 is eligible to participate in the Braille Challenge. (Registration coming soon)

  *   If your students do not know braille, they can participate in the NFB BELL Academy during the braille challenge with lots of fun activities!
  *   Consider nominating a teacher for Excellence in Braille Instruction.
  *   You can also nominate a student for the Sidney Iubelt Memorial Spirit Award (All applications coming soon)

Braille Readers are Leaders Contest
Registration for the Braille Readers Are Leaders contest, administered by the American Action Fund for Blind Children and Adults in partnership with the National Federation of the Blind, will open Friday, November 1. The contest, with categories for children and adults, will run through January 18, 2020, and reading logs must be submitted by February 1, 2020. Connections Beyond Sight and Sound grant funding opportunities for families with children birth -21 who have dual sensory impairments or CVI.
Grant funds can be used for:

  *   Parent training (attending a conference or training)
  *   Programs or activities supporting your child (special therapies, swimming, horseback riding)
  *   Materials or resources that your child may need (cane, chairs, communication devices)
Be creative when thinking about the needs of your child. Four grants will be awarded to families up to $500.00 each. Grant applications will be accepted through November 30, 2019. Grants will be awarded January 1, 2020.
