Our kids, teens, and tweens can earn additional raffle entries by
completing our “Summer Make and Take” monthly activities. Upon your
registration in the summer reading program, we mail you the supplies and
directions

so you can create the activity using basic household materials. This month
our activity focuses on creating a *Viking Longboat*.

The history of the Vikings and their longboats is quite interesting. After
watching “The Last Kingdom” on Netflix (not recommended for children), my
mind began wondering more about the history of this nomadic group of
people. According to Britannica.com
<https://www.britannica.com/topic/Viking-people>,

“Viking, also called Norseman or Northman, member of the Scandinavian
seafaring warriors who raided and colonized wide areas of Europe from the
9th to the 11th century and whose disruptive influence profoundly affected
European history. The Vikings were made up of landowning chieftains and
clan heads, their retainers, freemen, and any energetic young clan members
who sought adventure and booty overseas.

These bands would negotiate the seas in their longships and mount
hit-and-run raids at cities and towns along the coasts of Europe.

The longship, also called Viking ship, type of sail-and-oar vessel that
predominated in northern European waters for more than 1,500 years and
played an important role in history. Ranging from 45 to 75 feet (14 to 23
meters) in length, clinker-built (with overlapped planks), and carrying a
single square sail, the longship was exceptionally sturdy in heavy seas.
Fully developed examples have been found dating from 300 BCE. It carried
the Vikings on their piratical raids of the 9th century and bore Leif
Eriksson to America in 1000.”

With no time to waste, let’s get started creating your Viking ship! Once
you complete the activity, capture a picture of your creation and mail it
to kidsdesk.lbpd@ maryland.gov. This will earn you two tickets in any
raffle drawing you select.
